Exeter Library

Exeter Library A library, and cultural, community hub in the heart of Exeter, run by the Libraries Unlimited charity.

Exeter Library is at the heart of the city's cultural quarter. We are open seven days a week and receive an average of 1,500 visits a day. The library has over 1km of shelves containing over 60,000 books, CDs and DVDs which can be issued at any of the self-service points. In addition, the library has a reserve stack of approximately 150,000 items, available on request. There is a large children's

library overlooking Rougemont Gardens and a separate teen area, as well as 34 computers which are free to use for up to 2 hours per day and printing and copying facilities. Exeter Library is also home to the Business and Intellectual Property (IP) Centre, where you can access information and attend business events and workshops to support your business or start up. The library also houses the first FabLab to be located within a public library in England. FabLab Devon is a community creative space that provides access to a range of digital equipment and machinery. Exeter Library has a range of meeting rooms and function spaces available for hire for competitive rates. For events visit https://www.devonlibraries.org.uk/web/arena/events

Can you help us share the books everyone wants to read this month? 📚

There’s high demand for our 10 most wanted titles, and many eager customers are waiting to borrow them. We’ve purchased as many copies as our budget allows, but if you’re able to help, we’d be truly grateful.

If you have a pristine copy, you’ve finished reading - whether it’s one you bought yourself or received as a gift - you can donate it at any library in Devon or Torbay. We’ll add it to our collection to help reduce the waiting list.

Thank you so much for your support! 💚

Our 10 most popular titles this month are:

1. The Things We Never Say by Elizabeth Strout
2. Land by Maggie O'Farrell
3. Ironwood by Michael Connelly
4. Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke
5. The Midnight Train by Matt Haig
6. Whistler by Ann Patchett
7. The Names by Florence Knapp
8. The Final Target by Nora Roberts
9. London Falling by Patrick Radden Keefe
10. Enough by Dawn French

On the first Thursday of every month from June to September, InExeter is bringing Gandy Street to life with food, music and late-night shopping. First Thursdays kicks off on this week on the 4 June from 5pm 😁

Exeter Library is joining in. We're open until 7pm on Thursdays (and Tuesdays!) anyway, but on 4 June we're adding live acoustic music in the foyer from 5.30pm. Think of us as your calm corner of the evening. Somewhere to meet people, pick up a book, play a game, or simply sit 🌸

As founders of Q***r Folk, George Sansome and Sophie Crawford spent time digging through folk archives and found something remarkable: a rich body of LGBTQIA+ folk songs that had been sitting quietly, largely unheard. So they started performing them 🏳️‍🌈🎶

Sophie's solo work has been celebrated by Mainly Norfolk and she plays with Patrick Wolf. George's debut album made Songlines' Essential 10 Folk Albums of 2020. Together, they're touring with their new album and we're thrilled they're stopping off at Exeter Library on 18 June.

Doors at 7.30pm, music from 8pm. And there's a bar ☺

Last week we hosted the Bard of Exeter Competition 2026!!
Every year the public come together to vote for a storyteller, poet or other wordsmith to represent the city for a year and a day!

This year we had 7 fantastic Bardic hopefuls, and a huge turnout of more than 90 audience

We're delighted to say that there was a tie. And so we appointed not 1, but 2 Bards: Casey and Katy!!

Katy Cawkwell, Storyteller performs traditional folktale, myth and legend for adults, families & children of all ages. She's also the host of Artemis Storytelling.

Casey Garfield is a poet and author of several collections, who recently won the Exeter UNESCO City of Literature City Slam, and so will represent Exeter internationally at Slamovision 2026

Such an exciting year to come! We can't wait to see what these 2 Bards get up to

Huge thanks to the outgoing (in more ways than one) Bard, Kev Payne, to the Grand Bard and former Grand Bard (Ceri & Kimwei,) and to Exeter Unesco City of Literature, and Spork! for supporting this unique opportunity

Did you know Sylvia Plath's collected poems haven't had a major new edition since 1981?

That changes this year, as the new Faber edition, co-edited by Amanda Golden and Karen V. Kukil, nearly doubles the original collection and brings together decades of scholarship, previously unpublished poems, and full textual histories.

We're marking the occasion with a free event at Exeter Library on 25 June, 6–7pm. Come and hear Amanda Golden and Dr Robin Peel discuss what makes this edition such a significant moment for Plath's readers and her legacy.

Free, 6–7pm, Rougemont Room. Book your place in the link below 👇https://www.facebook.com/events/892158350513130
