NHS Devon

NHS Devon NHS Devon is proud to be part of One Devon. We are the local headquarters for the NHS in Devon.

NHS Devon CCG is responsible for commissioning, or buying, most healthcare services for the local population. We operate in an area of diversity with large urban cities such as Plymouth, and remote rural areas such as Dartmoor. We plan local healthcare and buy services from large acute hospitals, such as the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, along with community services and mental health services.

We are dedicated to the principles of the NHS – a universal service, free at the point of delivery, where the quality and safety of services is of utmost importance. We are determined to work with our local communities and other partners in our area, to improve people’s health and make sure they are able to receive high quality, local services.

A heatwave can affect anyone, but the most vulnerable people are:
🚩 Older people, especially those over 75 and female
🚩 Those who live on their own or in a care home
🚩 People who have a serious or long-term illness including heart or lung conditions, diabetes, kidney disease, Parkinson's disease or some mental health conditions
🚩 People who are on multiple medicines that may make them more likely to be badly affected by hot weather
🚩 Those who may find it hard to keep cool, babies and the very young, the bed bound, those with drug or alcohol addictions, or with Alzheimer's disease
🚩 People who spend a lot of time outside or in hot places, those who live in a top-floor flat, the homeless or those whose jobs are outside

🌡️ Hot weather and your lungs – what you need to know

When temperatures rise above 25°C, hot weather can start to affect your lung health. If you live with asthma or COPD, taking steps to stay well in the heat could help reduce flare-ups, prevent asthma attacks, and even avoid trips to your GP or hospital.
Not everyone with a lung condition is affected in the same way, but for some people, hot weather can make symptoms worse. Here’s why:
☀️ Hot, humid air can make breathing feel harder and may increase symptoms like breathlessness and wheezing.
🌻 Higher pollen levels are common in warmer weather. If you also have hay fever, it could trigger or worsen your lung symptoms.
💙 Top tip: Stay cool, keep hydrated, and monitor your symptoms during hot spells. If you notice changes, follow your care plan and seek advice if needed.

In hot weather, remember to stay out of direct sunshine, especially between 11am and 3pm, as UV rays are strongest during these hours. If you’re going out during these times walk in the shade, apply sunscreen, wear a hat, sunglasses and light, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothes.

Drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol during the hot weather. Avoid extreme physical exertion during the hot weather. If you can’t avoid strenuous outdoor activity, try to do it during cooler time of the day such as the early morning or
the evening . Keep your home cool by closing windows and curtains in rooms that face the sun.
