Bank Holiday! | Have a safe TRIP

Whether you’re leaving the south west or coming to visit, have a safe and enjoyable summer holiday road trip.

Follow the T.R.I.P. checks every driver needs to perform to keep themselves, their passengers and other road users safe.

TOP UP your fuel or battery, oil and screen wash
REST with planned stops of at least 15 minutes every two hours
INSPECT tyre pressure, tread depth and for cracks or tears before setting out
PREPARE for all weather conditions…it may be very hot, or we may have rain and thunderstorms

We’ll add that SPEED limits are there for your safety, they are not a target. Drive within the limit and to prevailing road, weather and traffic conditions. So, TRIPS: as easy to remember as TRIP.

APPEAL | We are aware of a video which had been circulating on an Exmouth community group social media page yesterday showing an assault taking place in Exeter.

The video has since been deleted.

We are currently investigating the incident, which occurred by Exeter Cathedral on Tuesday 25 August at around 8.15pm.

Numerous people were involved, and we are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about those responsible.

Something unusual is coming to Exmouth on Friday 28th August. And its not rain or other atmospheric changes! (though that is entirely possible as its bank holiday weekend)
In our quest to try and keep our residents and businesses safe, we are going to use a piece of kit that has NEVER BEFORE been deployed in Devon and only once in the whole force area.
Live facial recognition.
Straight away, I hear the cogs of fury in certain quarters of our community and we fully get that. It is a topic that causes apprehension. I mean no one wants to live in a pol!ce state do they, least of all me by the way! - unlike this app which wont let me write police and state together because its inappropriate apparently.
How does this “secret spy tech infringement on your civil liberties” thing work then?
Well. It’s none of the above.
A big white van with blue and yellow tape all over it gets parked up and has uniform police officers from the Exmouth Neighbourhood Policing Team outside it.
The kit is set up to specifically look for a predetermined group of wanted people, those that like to steal things and those that present a risk to vulnerable people in our community.
If it detects them, the officers will engage the individual for a chat.
This is not the Eye of Sauron from Lord of the Rings. It is not all seeing. It is not fussed if you are enjoying a coffee or popping out for some milk or a birthday card for your gran (and not a wanted criminal!).
It is certainly not what is often portrayed in the media. We have no interest in storing your face, as nice as it may be. The reality is that most people will probably have unknowingly been exposed to this technology for some time in retail environments anyway.
This is a great opportunity to try this out and we are chuffed that we managed to get it to little old Exmouth first.
The serious bit. This not some slap dash thing we just chose to do. We have been looking to do it for a couple of months and a lot of consideration and effort goes into getting its deployment authorised at a very high level.

I know that the comments section will immediately get filled with the good, the bad and ugly. I have chosen not to turn it off because who doesn’t like a bit of free speech right?! However, rather than have a rant, why not come down and see us in town, ask a few questions and support the local economy whilst you are there. Bring your kids, meet the team, get a sticker.

Like an episode of Michael Portillo's Great British Railway Journeys, the Exmouth Neighbourhood Policing Team joined forces with the British Transport Police* this weekend, and got on the Exmouth Branch Line to spend some quality time on the train seemingly minus their 'Bradshaw's Guide'. 🚂
Instead of spotting sights of interest along the Avocet Line, they removed numerous individuals causing anti-social behaviour and heading towards Exmouth and also located and arrested a wanted male that has been travelling to Exmouth and is becoming a bit of a regular shoplifter.

*Who are British Transport Police? BTP are the police force responsible for crime and policing on the UK's rail network and surround infrastructure. They do have an office in Exeter but cover the whole of Devon and Cornwall from there. They manage everything from fare evasion to train strike deaths and the horrid aftermath. Its not like a US cop show where we argue over jurisdiction. We work closely together and support each other.

Its GCSE results day!! A day of mixed emotions, trepidation but hopefully joy and success.

Some our officers are much much much nearer to this experience than I am but I still clearly recall that day back in the mid 90's and being a bit disappointed with my maths grade! Shortly followed by my first ever tooth filling an hour later. What I don't recall is having to work out what the heck a grade 9 is versus a grade 7 (all A's apparently!!). It was a simpler time back then.

There are a world of options out there so even if you don't quite get what you want, there will be other equally awesome things that you can do.

So from all of us here at Exmouth and Ottery police stations, we wish the former year 11 of Clyst Vale, Cranbrook, Kings and Exmouth all the best today.

Kindly leave our towns and public spaces intact when you finish partying 😉

Whaaaaaat!!!! Rain. How dare it rain. Does the sky not realise how nice its been not having to mow my lawn that bares more resemblance to Exmouth beach in colour, than the patch of green garden it should be.

Anyway. First rain in months means more than just a very imminent explosion of brambles and other frustrating weeds. It means the roads are really slippy. REALLY SLIPPY. Thats months of oil and other vehicular detritus thats built up and now all wet. And as if that was not bad enough, there are puddles. Some quite big ones.

Stay safe out there and if you ride a motorbike or have budget car tyres, take extra special care today.

Each to their own on this but I was quite enjoying the heat 😎
