Exeter Port Authority The Harbour Master staff work in partnership with users to help ensure that everyone can enjoy the water safely.

Exe Estuary extends for some 12 kilometres and plays host to an active boating and watersports community as well as being recognised as being of international importance to wildlife. The Harbour Master staff work in partnership with Estuary users to help ensure that everyone can enjoy the water safely. A warm welcome awaits you if you want to visit for an afternoon or moor a boat with us year-round. For visiting yachtsmen, sail the oldest working shipping canal in Europe, first opened to shipping in 1566 and the first canal to be built in Britain since Roman times. Enter the historic canal through Turf Lock and journey peacefully through 8 km of manmade waterway, enjoying stunning views and a variety of wildlife. 01392 265791 Mon to Fri 10:00 hrs to 15:00 hrs. Coarse fishing is available on the Exeter Canal between the Canal Office swing bridges and Turf Locks. A permit must be obtained from Exeter & District Angling Association to fish these areas

The Canoe Loops are a series of self-guided circular canoeing/ kayaking trails that link the River Exe and Exeter Ship Canal between Exeter Quayside and the Exe Estuary.

Starcross Fishing and Cruising Club Pontoon

Notice is hereby given that the Starcross Fishing and Cruising Club pontoons will be removed for repair work between the 4th and 5th of June 2026. Existing position below:
50°37.656'N
003°26.732'W
Care should be taken when navigating around the area north of Starcross ferry pier as there will be single unlit piles inside of the hammer head. The south east pile will be lit with a double green navigation light.

The remaining sections of the marina are not to be used until further notice.

Mariners are asked to proceed with caution in this area whilst this work is undertaken.

The ferry repairs have been completed and it will start operating again tomorrow Saturday 16 May 2026 as per the May 2026 schedule.

The ferry unfortunately continues to be not fit for use following the steering gear breakdown last Sunday.

Exeter Port Authority Local Notice to Mariners

Number: 16/26. Date: 5th May 2026

Event: X Bay Ocean Race - 09.05.2026 Notice is hereby given that Exmouth Beach Rescue Club will be running ‘The X Bay Ocean Race’ on the 09.05.2026

The race will start from the beach opposite the life saving club heading out to navigation mark 1 (Orcombe Point) the competitors will then turn towards navigation mark 2 and then towards Sandy bay completing 3 laps before returning to the beach (total 10 miles)
Competitors - approximately 140. All competitors will be wearing orange race bibs.

Start - 11:40 - 12:00 This year there will be four different classes of SUP (stand up paddle boards) single & double outrigger canoes and single & double surf skis. This year we they will also be running six man outrigger canoes (4 off) as a test event alongside the race. Please note the six man canoes are around 40’ long so are not particularly manoeuvrable.

Finish (off water) 14:00

Off shore marks will be yellow 2.5 m high inflatables and will be set by 10:00.

The course will be patrolled by 4 orange rescue boats and a larger rib (RIB - call sign - High Spirts). The Marshall boat will be sat in the area of navigation mark 2.

The organiser can be contacted on the day on VHF 16/ P5/P4 (Call sign - Exmouth beach rescue water safety)

Vessels not taking part are asked to keep clear of competitors within this area during this event.

Unfortunately the ferry will be closed for operations as from 2.00 pm today due to a mechanical breakdown.

We will keep you updated when the ferry has been repaired and is due to start operating again.
