Hindringham Hall A Tudor house surrounded by a 12th century moat provides a magical backdrop for the beautiful gardens of Hindringham Hall. There are 2 holiday cottages. N.B.

Situated just 4 miles from the North Norfolk Coast this private garden opens 2 days a week during the summer months. The mediaeval fishponds and moat are designated ancient monument whereas the Tudor Hall is grade 2*. Together they provide a backdrop for this magical garden. The house was bought in 1993 and the garden has been developed by the owners over that time gradually spreading out from the

house. Initially there was no intention to "open" the gardens but after several successful N.G.S. open days, visitors were asking to see the garden at other times of the year. We hope you enjoy it. Our beautiful New Zealand flax sending up 14 spikes as it flowers beside the Moat at Hindringham Hall.
Planted about 20 years ago in a perfect spot but has this summer done for it and is it going to survive or is it making lots of seed to replace itself??

Please admire from afar -but try to avoid walking on the edge of the East lawn where the purple Colchicums are appearing. Sometimes call Naked ladies, these members of the lily family flower before their leaves appear and it is difficult to spot them.

The Moat Level has dropped. It does have springs but with drought these have stopped; it can also be fed by the stream but the water has become a trickle. With a lower water level the Moat Walls are vulnerable. Standing with your back to the Pleached Hornbeam you will see across the Moat an exposed line of flints which once would have been the Moat wall. In some places, where the flint walls have gone, we have planted Water Iris as a buffer to the erosion by the water of the banks.

In an area in the garden, previously where grass existed, sprang up this plant. Identified as Datura Ferox or large thorn apple because of the large spikey seed capsule it produces. A member of the Datura family every part of the plant contains deadly toxins to both animals and humans. The Mirabelle Plum Tree in the Water Garden has been devastated by the strong winds and almost the entire crop lies on the ground. Our winter supply of jam comes from this tree tasting like a cross between apricots and marmalade. Both yellow and red Mirabelle can be found growing wild in hedgerows and in the UK this delicious fruit is mainly ignored but in the Lorraine region of France it is much sought after and they even hold annual special Mirabelle Festivals.

Beneath the urns in the gardens at Hindringham Hall can be seen the beautiful white flowers of Romneya. Belonging to the Poppy family and enjoying the sunny sheltered position this plant is a native to southern California and drought tolerant.
