A splendid renaissance country Palace built with French flair by James the IV and James V in the 1500’s. The Royal Palace of Falkland was a favoured hunting retreat for the Stuart Monarchs, including Mary Queen of Scots. The Palace is elaborately decorated and furnished, with antiques dating back to the Stuart Dynasty, 17th Century Flemish tapestries and stunning 19th century painted interiors. Th

e Chapel Royal, dating from the reign of James V is still used as a place of worship today. The Palace also has Britain’s oldest remaining Real Tennis court which was built in 1539 and the only surviving Percy Cane designed garden.

What a fascinating talk tonight by historian Laura Stewart on Charles I. The evening was made even more special by being held in the Chapel Royal at Falkland Palace, where the magnificent ceiling was originally decorated for Charles I himself centuries ago.

Laura delivered a wonderfully engaging and thought-provoking lecture, followed by a fantastic Q&A session with some excellent questions from the audience that sparked fascinating discussion and added even more depth to the evening.

A huge thank you to Laura and to everyone who came along and contributed to such a memorable event.

Be sure to check Eventbrite for upcoming events in the Falkland Palace Lecture Series 2026—we look forward to welcoming you to the next talk!

Step back in time tomorrow evening at Falkland Palace & Garden for a fascinating talk on Charles I, the Scottish Covenanters and the English Civil Wars with renowned historian Laura Stewart.

This engaging lecture will explore the political and religious tensions of the period, the role of the Covenanters, and the events that ultimately led to the king’s ex*****on in 1649.

Laura Stewart, Professor of Early Modern British History at the University of York, is an award-winning historian and acclaimed author specialising in the Stuart period and the Civil Wars. This promises to be a thought-provoking evening for anyone interested in Scottish and British history.
