Helpers wanted at Mawnan Park! 🌱

A massive thank you to Sarah and the whole team at Falmouth Garden Centre for generously donating lots of plants for our new nature area at Mawnan Park. This support will help us create a lovely space for people and wildlife. 🌿

If you’d like to volunteer, join us for bulb planting and tidying on Wednesday 14 October, from 9am to 12pm. Everyone is welcome, whether you can spare half an hour or the whole morning!

SECOND ROUND OF 2026 GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR LOCAL PROJECTS THAT BENEFIT THE COMMUNITY
OPENS 1ST OCTOBER AND CLOSES 4TH DECEMBER

Mawnan Parish Council has a small grant programme that will open on 1st October and run until until Dec 4th. Please see our grants page for more information. If you are a member of a group which wishes to be considered for a grant from the Parish Council for a particular project or activity, then go to the grants page on our website. Just a reminder there is a lot of wood (ash) and chippings for those who can collect it: we’ve had some tree work done at the community burial ground up at Mawnan Church. There is a pile of logs stacked against the boundary wall (between the old and new graveyard) and some chippings at the bottom of the field. Please note you will need to bring a wheelbarrow and park in the car park if you’d like to take some- there is no vehicular access into the field. Free to anyone in living in the parish.

**Opening for a new Councillor: Unfortunately Sarah Mason has resigned as a Cllr as she has moved to Devon which means that we have one space that has opened up so if anyone would like to join the parish council and help keep the village running smoothly (well… we try) and have a say in how things are done then please drop me a line on 251022 or email me on [email protected]. Or just turn up on Tuesday next week. It’s an exciting time to join- Mawnan Park is about to be redeveloped and fingers crossed we have the Carwinion Playing Fields expansion in the pipeline so lots is happening.

**Remember the Neighbourhood Development Plans? Well here we go again… and we need some members of the public who care about housing and the future of the parish help to create a new Neighbourhood Priority Statement for Mawnan Parish: As most of you will know the housing targets for Cornwall have more than doubled which has forced Cornwall Council to try to work out where on earth (literally) all these new houses are supposed to go. As a consequence the planning policies developed in the NDP are largely out of date and don’t really hold any weight anymore. Town and Parish Councils are being asked to produce Neighbourhood Priority Statements which are described as a way for ‘communities to set out their priorities for growth and development’. These must be community led (there will be a consultation) and are not allowed to say the parish doesn’t want development, more look at what ‘the best development for the parish would look like’. There is then a Statutory obligation for the local planning authority to take published statements into account when determining the policies of the new Local Plan. We need a few members of the public who would be willing to join the working group, along with Cllrs, to put this 12-14 page statement together over the next 12 months. It will be the only form of protection the parish has against development so it needs to be robust and well put together. Community led consultations which evidence residents wants and wishes are the only way to do this. Please email [email protected] to get involved or come to the meeting on Tuesday.

**Falmouth Dredging: The Strategic Planning Committee have not yet met to discuss this application and as of now there is no date set for them to do so. The full planning application and residents' comments can be viewed through the planning portal at Cornwall Council (PA25/01598). **Cornwall Council is developing a new campaign focused on reducing fly-tipping across Cornwall: and they would like to hear from community organisations and local stakeholders about the issues they're seeing on the ground.

They are particularly interested in hearing about:

• Areas where fly-tipping or littering is a persistent problem
• Locations that may be under-reported but are causing concern locally
• Any patterns or trends you've noticed over time
• The types of waste commonly found
• Any factors that you feel contribute to issues in your area
• The impact these issues have on the local area or community
• Examples of successful local initiatives, interventions or community-led approaches

**Warning issued over squishy dumplings. This has nothing to do with your takeaway. This about new sensory toys, which are shaped like bao buns, and have become hugely popular with children and young people. However, the rapid growth in demand has led to an increasing number of manufacturers producing the toys, and some products on sale in the UK do not meet the required safety standards. Cornwall Council’s Trading Standards team is urging parents and carers to check for the UKCA or CE safety markings when buying the toys, and to throw away any squishies that have a strong chemical smell. **There is a quarterly forum for patients registered with the four local practices in Falmouth & Penryn: Penryn Surgery, Falmouth Health Centre, Trescobeas Surgery and Westover Surgery. It is run by the Falmouth and Penryn Integrated Network Team. The aim is to increase the attendance among patients registered with these practices. The next meeting is on at 2.15pm on 14th October, Pendennis Community Centre.

The Mawnan BioBlitz is going ahead tomorrow despite the weather.

Come along to Mawnan Bowling Club between 10am and 4pm to learn more about our local wildlife and green spaces, meet conservation groups, enjoy family activities and help raise money for the next phase of improvements at Mawnan Park.

We hope to see lots of the community there.

Help protect water supplies

As Cornwall is officially in drought, water resources across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly remain under pressure. Town and parish councils may find it helpful to be aware of the advice on protecting water supplies shown below that Cornwall Council is sharing with the public:

Despite the wet winter, water resources across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly remain under pressure.

With Cornwall officially in drought, every drop counts.

Reservoirs, groundwater and other water sources can take much longer to recover than many people realise, and recent warm, dry weather has increased demand for water at the same time.

The good news is that there are simple steps we can all take to help:
1. taking shorter showers
2. turning off taps while brushing your teeth
3. keep drinking water in the fridge instead of running the tap until it becomes cold
4. only running washing machines and dishwashers when full
5. reusing water on garden plants where safe to do so can all make a difference.
Small changes made by thousands of households add up quickly and help protect supplies for everyone.

If you’re free tomorrow, Friday 21 August, please join councillors and volunteers for a tidy-up in Mawnan Park.

We’ll be there from 8.30am until noon, weeding, watering and giving the park a general tidy.

Come along for as much or as little time as you can spare. All help is very welcome! 🌿

🌿 Join us for another Mawnan Park gardening session

We’re holding another volunteer gardening session at Mawnan Park on Friday 21 August to help look after some of the new planting.

All ages are welcome, although children must be accompanied by an adult.

Equipment will be provided, but you’re very welcome to bring your own tools. Please wear sturdy footwear and suitable outdoor clothing, and don’t forget a hat, suncream and a drink.

Even if you can only spare a little time, we’d love to have your help.
