Good morning!
We've recently welcomed 3 new trainee Community First Responders to the Fareham team - Tom, Harrison and Tiegan!
They're just staring their journey, serving the Fareham area and you'll see them out and about on their first response shifts over the coming weeks.
We're also welcoming mamy new supporters and followers, meeting us at events, courses and engaging with our social media recently, so we thought we’d put up a post explaining exactly who we are, what we do in the local area and answer some frequently asked questions… Especially as our demand is expected to increase over the summer!
So, here we go..
1. What do you do?
We are a team of South Central Ambulance Service volunteer responders who attend 999/111 calls alongside regular ambulances. We aim to be first on scene when you need us most as we are generally dispatched to incidents in our local area and may be closer than a larger ambulance crew.
2. What equipment do you carry?
Our Response Car is equipped with lots of equipment that we may need to support patients until an Ambulance can arrive. We carry equipment such as; Oxygen, entonox (Gas and air), a Defibrillator, Observation equipment (to measure Pulse Rate, Blood Pressure, temperature, blood glucose levels and oxygen saturations), dressings and bandages, catastrophic haemorrhage control equipment and an Emergency lifting cushion.
3. What training do you have?
All of our volunteers complete comprehensive in house training with South Central Ambulance and attend core skills refreshers to ensure that we are up to date with all the life saving practices and procedures that are required!
4. How do you get sent to calls?
We are dispatched by the Ambulance Service Control Room as an additional resource alongside our regular South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust ambulances. This means that if you call 999/111, even though we are dispatched at the same time, one of our volunteers may arrive to assist you before a regular ambulance. Please remember to provide any important access information for your address to our call handlers.
5. Do you respond on blue lights?
No, however due to the proximity of the calls that we are dispatched too we regularly arrive before an ambulance in the first instance! You may see us driving around in our Marked Dacia Response cars, this vehicle allows us to carry all of our equipment and is brightly marked in its orange and green livery with South Central Ambulance Charity branding.
6.How can I help?
There are a number of ways that you can get involved! You could make a kind donation to the South Central Ambulance Charity (links can be found on our main page - please mention the Fareham team!), this enables us to purchase new equipment, train more volunteers and to provide support and welfare to our operational staff!
On our page we alsonhave details of 2 fantastic competitions we are running to raise funding within the Fareham areas.
We have a great community raffle, with wonderful prizes donated from many local businesses.
We also have our special Spitfires.com competition to win a once in a lifetime Spitfire Simulator experience at Goodwood Aerodrome!
Keep an eye out for us driving around whilst on duty, or at local events and don’t be afraid to come and say hello!
Keep your eyes on our page for more updates!
