Faringdon Folly Tower and woodland

Faringdon Folly Tower and woodland The Faringdon Folly Tower and woodland The style is unusual in that the stark perpendicular building is topped with gothic flourishes and mock battlements.

The Folly Tower, standing on Folly Hill, is a wonderful viewpoint over 5 counties and a landmark that can be seen for miles around. The 104ft high tower was built in 1935 by the eccentric Lord Berners, the then owner of Faringdon House, for his young friend Robert Heber-Percy. It is the last folly to be built in England. The Folly Tower is open on the 1st and 3rd Sundays between April and October.

The 4 acre woodland, with magnificent Scots Pine and broadleaf trees, some over 200 years old, has been developed with interesting and quirky art and structures- the fairly useless bridge, civil war cannon, 24 blackbirds (from Sing a Song of Sixpence), Lord Berners high in a tree, and various animals and birds. The woodland is always open and a great place for parents and children to spend time. It is only a few minutes walk from Faringdon's Historic Market Place where refreshments are available. Book the Tower for your party or celebration. Details on https://www.faringdonfolly.org.uk/bookings.html

Did you know that, before the year 2000, the Folly Tower stood in darkness with no electricity at all?

It was Peter White who changed that. With incredible determination, he raised funds from local businesses, laid the power cables, and went on to design and erect the stunning Millennium Beacon. For more than 20 years after, he even took care of putting the Christmas lights on the Tower — a tradition that has brought joy to countless people near and far.

The Christmas star is truly magnificent and continues to delight Faringdon residents and visitors alike.
Thank you so much, Peter — what an inspiring legacy.

It wasn't a white Christmas in Faringdon - but during the Twelve Days of Christmas - we DO have a WHITE Christmas Star!
