Sometimes, having somewhere safe to go, and people who see you, listen to you and care about you, can change how you see yourself and your future.

In Namuwongo, many teenage girls find their childhood cut short by pregnancy, often left to parent alone after being abandoned or disowned by family. The 360° project wraps around these young mothers with tailored training, emotional support and practical skills, creating safe spaces where they can find connection, confidence and a path forward for themselves and their children.

Do you have a child with a disability, work with children with disabilities, or suspect that a child may be experiencing difficulties?

Our team in Ghana has created a new series of resources to help parents, teachers, carers and others who support children recognise difficulties that may be signs of a disability.

The videos cover a range of areas, including visual, reading, spelling and writing, and attention and concentration difficulties, offering practical guidance on some of the signs to look out for.

What does it take to build a nationwide inclusive education course that actually works for teachers?

This week, Chance for Childhood and the Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB) through the RISE Project brought together stakeholders from REB, the University of Rwanda College of Education, Teacher Training Colleges, Organisations of Persons with Disabilities, Civil Society Organisations, Inclusive Education Specialists, and Development Partners for a Technical Review and Validation Workshop on the Mandatory Online Course on Special Needs and Inclusive Education for Teachers.

Participants reviewed course content, learning activities, assessments, multimedia materials, and accessibility features, and provided technical and pedagogical feedback. The workshop produced key recommendations and agreed-upon revisions to strengthen the course's content, accessibility, and inclusiveness, and to align it with national standards and the teacher Continuous Professional Development framework, ahead of digitization and deployment on the REB E-learning Platform.

We are excited to be a part of this move towards accessible, sustainable, and quality professional development opportunities for teachers in Rwanda.

For years, Charlotte's son Manzi grew up without being able to attend school or play with other children.

The stigma surrounding her sons disability affected the family.

Joining a Parent Support Group gave Charlotte a chance to connect with other parents who understood her experience. She describes it as healing.

Today, Manzi goes to school alongside his siblings. Two years after starting Primary One at 14, he came second in school.

Manzi has a dream of his own. "I will become a medical doctor in charge of helping people with disabilities."

Manzi and his family are supported through Chance for Childhood’s CBIS project in Rwanda, delivered in partnership with UNICEF Rwanda. The project provides community-based rehabilitation, physiotherapy, parent support groups and livelihood support to children with disabilities and their families.

Guess what happened this week?

The girls in our 360° project watched Queen of Katwe!

What if your future could be bigger than your circumstances?

The idea to watch this movie came from self-assessments during our psychosocial sessions on self-worth, identity and value. The team found that some of the girls struggle with low confidence and self-esteem, and may not always believe in their ability to build a better future for themselves.

They decided to get creative and choose something that could speak to them in a different and more powerful way.

Queen of Katwe, inspired by the journey of Ugandan chess champion Phiona Mutesi, tells a powerful story of resilience and possibility. It reminds us that where you come from does not have to define where you are going.

Sometimes, you need to see someone else’s story to start believing in your own.

There is so much more to learn from this inspiring movie. We can't wait to hear what stood out to them and the lessons they are taking away. 😊

Five of the nine African countries facing the steepest UK aid cuts are countries where we work with children living with disabilities.
Our CEO Ven Nyamondo has published a statement calling on Prime Minister Andy Burnham to protect disability-inclusive programming from blanket reductions to bilateral aid.
Disability inclusion cannot be a flagship policy in London and an optional extra when budgets tighten.

Five more Chance for Childhood Rwanda team members are now certified in the Children's Accelerated Trauma Technique (CATT), strengthening our ability to provide trauma-informed support to children with disabilities.

There is an urgent need for accessible mental health and psychosocial support. Research shows that children with disabilities are 2–4 times more likely to experience trauma than their peers. By integrating CATT into our programmes, our newly certified staff will be better equipped to help more children process trauma, build resilience, and thrive.

Mental health must be a national priority in Uganda.

Chance for Childhood Uganda joined the 4th Mental Health Awareness Camp at the Parliament of Uganda under the theme, “Advancing Mental Health through Policy Action.”

Our team showcased two evidence-based innovations that are helping transform child mental health support: the Disability Detect App and the Children’s Accelerated Trauma Technique (CATT). These practical, child-friendly tools support early identification and help children access the care they need to thrive.

We welcome the commitment from the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Jackson Markson Oboth-Oboth, to champion a substantial increase in the national mental health budget, which currently stands at just 1%.

Now is the time to turn commitment into action. We call on Parliament, policymakers and partners to adopt evidence-based tools such as the Disability Detect App and CATT, and to work together to develop a stronger national framework and protocol for child and adolescent mental health in Uganda.

Every child deserves access to quality mental health support.
