Today in Southwest Uganda, our team presented credentials to the Nakivale Settlement Authorities, marking a significant step in our expanding work across the region. As part of our Ready to Learn project, we are extending services to two refugee reception camps and two resettlement sites.

Nakivale is the second most populated refugee settlement in Uganda, receiving refugees from the Kisoro and Kanungu receiving camps. The need for inclusive education support here is real and urgent.

This project will screen 5,000 children for disabilities, support parents and teachers, and strengthen referral pathways for children with disabilities.

Every child deserves the chance to learn, belong and thrive. But for many children with disabilities and special education needs, that opportunity can feel far away.

In Ghana, we are working to change that. Through our inclusive education programme, we are transforming schools, empowering teachers and helping children grow and flourish - one child, one teacher, one school at a time.

Chance for Childhood is delivering transformational projects in Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, where cases of Ebola have been reported. Today, we can share an update on the impact of the outbreak on our projects.

Uganda

Our team is operating with a heightened state of readiness across our Uganda programme. This includes enhanced monitoring, staff awareness, referral readiness and contingency planning. There are no suspected cases involving staff, beneficiaries, volunteers or partner personnel at this time. Referral and reporting procedures are being aligned with guidance from the Ministry of Health.

DRC

In Goma and surrounding areas where our project operates, our 15 project schools remain open. Children continue to attend classes and are following health authority guidelines, including regular handwashing and avoiding contact with those affected.

We will continue to monitor both situations closely and provide updates as needed.

Today is World Assistive Technology Day.

For children like Addea, the right support at the right time is a chance at the future they deserve.

Addea was struggling to keep up at school in Ghana. She told us, "I couldn't see what was written on the board." A referral through our Best Start Together programme got her the glasses she needed and today, she loves learning. 👓

Addea isn't alone. Through our award-winning Disability Detect app, we've screened over 30,000 children across Ghana, of whom 16% showed signs of a disability or additional need. Of those, 55% were successfully referred for specialist support. 17 assistive devices were provided, and two children received life-changing eye surgery.

Early detection isn't a nice-to-have. It's the difference between a child who thrives and a child whose potential goes unseen. ❤️

Over a year later, our Big Pig Project in Rwanda is having an incredible impact! 🐷

Through this project, children with disabilities and their families are building sustainable livelihoods from pig farming.

Our vet, Jean Paul, supports families by providing training, pig health check-ups and immunisations, and helping them use pig manure as a natural fertiliser to improve crops. More children with disabilities are now in school and actively participating in their communities, while families are also enjoying healthier, more balanced diets.

All it takes is one pig to transform a family’s life. 💜

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇷🇼Last Wednesday, Chance for Childhood Rwanda had the honour of welcoming Dr Daniel Khomba from the Scottish Government, the funding partner for our RISE project.

The first day of the visit featured presentations from Chance for Childhood, YWCA and Oxfam, where we shared updates on the progress and impact of our RISE Project.

On Thursday, Dr Khomba, accompanied by the RISE staff team and our Country Representative, visited Gicumbi District, where they met the Mayor and the Education Unit team.

The team later visited GS Cyumba to observe classroom lessons and engage with the Inclusive Education Club, teachers, and parents. Club members showcased poems, songs, and sketches about inclusive education.
