Save Standard Quay - We tried, we failed. But maybe, one day. http://standardquay.com/ http://www.thequayfilm.net/ http://intheboatshed.net/ It attracts visitors from around the country as well as the world.

Standard Quay in Faversham is unique, one of a fast-diminishing handful of resources providing mooring and repair for traditional sailing barges as well as training a new generation of skilled craftsmen. But the lease ends in July 2011 and there are no signs that it will be renewed. Time is running out for not only the quay but for the traditions, vessels, skills and livelihoods preserved here. P

It seems time to close this page in a week or so but I wanted to leave time to reach you all to say thank you for your support over the years. And thank you also to those from the 'other side' who took the time to ask questions. With the yes vote for the neighbourhood plan, standard quay is now lost to working maritime use for the foreseeable future. Thank you so much to everyone who supported the fight. I could go on but I won't. It's all been said. I will keep the blog site standardquay.com going as a historical record.

16/508341/FULL : Permitted. So if you get told time and again that your plans for a site are inappropriate and out of keeping with the area just keep reapplying if you have the money to do so and the resources to keep a building you own empty and unproductive for years. A sad day for Abbey St. The one way system of Abbey St and Belvedere Rd is not far off now. And the east side of Faversham is now one big development opportunity... I wonder who owns all the land? There is apparently also an application in the pipeline for houses in the green sheds - SECOS site application already in. Its a simple development plan: change the character of a working area totally in little snippets and suddenly one day what you do is totally in keeping with the new suburbia.

From this weeks inspectors findings at swan quay and just as applicable on sq: He said that while the term "gentrification" was not an official planning use term, it did not need to be. The inspector could take into account its meaning as "erosion" of traditional uses by the introduction of "historically unprecedented and inconsistent use that would bring with it a different aesthetic which would harm the historic character".
And it is not just simple aesthetics as in something just pretty to look at. It fundamentally damages its whole existence as a real 21st century skilled employment site

High tide warning has been given locally for Friday this week. Please be vigilant on the Quay. The tide can reach the buildings especially those where the protective barriers have been removed.

Well, what a surprise (not) - planning permission being asked again for restaurant in 'building 1' (the biggest wooden shed) on SQ. Also predictably, Highways not objecting due to no significant increase in traffic given the already increased traffic caused by other developments in recent years on the Quay including the car wash, housing behind, retail stuff etc etc. And given no strong objections to this over the years from local residents and the fact that businesses on the Quay are run by locals who have local support it will be difficult to object on those grounds. However, the situation has not changed that these were simple sheds used fully by maritime industry which was closed down by Mr White in order to develop for higher rent uses. As far as I can tell, (it is difficult and slow to download the very large number of documents in this application) it looks like the claim is still being made that large sums of money are needed to maintain what should be a simple wooden structure. There is little left now of the ambience for which this rare group of buildings was originally listed. They have been 'tidied up' and their character in my opinion, destroyed. The quay is lined with houseboats which do not move and do not use any skilled workers for maintenance as happened in the days before Mr White closed the boatyard. There is a small dry dock which just adds insult to injury as it is too small for barges or other large traditional vessels and there are no shore based facilities for a proper team of shipwrights to use anyway. Depressing but nothing lasts for ever and I hope that the Quay as a working traditional boatyard will live on in the memories of many. It has taken 6 long years but at long last someone in authority seems to understand what a devastating blow changing the flood designation was to the then fledgling revival of the creek industries and especially to the apprenticeship scheme that was so successful on Standard Quay. We will be told that nothing can be done to change the flood designation back again... But ... never say never. https://visionsofacreek.wordpress.com/2016/03/04/where-the-local-plan-meets-the-neighbourhood-plan/ https://visionsofacreek.wordpress.com/2016/03/04/where-the-local-plan-meets-the-neighbourhood-plan/

on a somewhat more depressing note - the appeal against refusal of permission for the car wash on the transport depot site is near response closure date (tomorrow is the deadline (not sure if that means comments should be in today though) more info on the visions of a creek blog. The Nautical Festival is such a brilliant demonstration of how important to the local economy the Creek is when we can use it unimpeded by inappropriate development.
