Friends of Faversham Recreation Ground

Friends of Faversham Recreation Ground Keep up with events and activities at Faversham Rec. It is well used and valued by the community.

Located in the heart of Faversham and already enjoyed on a daily basis by many in the local community, we are looking to make your visit and experience of Faversham Recreation Ground even better. Established in 1860 using funding from the Henry Wreight Charity and public subscription toward the cost of purchasing 20 acres of land and initially laying out the open space, Faversham Recreation Ground

is owned by Faversham Municipal Charities and leased by Swale Borough Council with the aim of providing valuable green space and recreational facilities for the community. Parks for People is a joint Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund programme which aims to protect and enhance historic parks, helping to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy these important public open spaces. The Rec is one of the most significant heritage parks in Swale, retaining much of its original Victorian layout and contains listed features such as the Gardeners Lodge and Loggia. Given its age, some areas of the park and buildings are tired and there is a lack of appreciation and understanding of the park’s history and its links to the community. The aim of the project at Faversham Recreation Ground is to ensure that this heritage is protected and that people have more opportunities to visit, understand and be involved with the park and learn about its history. In July 2018 the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Big Lottery Fund (BLF) announced the project has been awarded more the £1.6m for an ambitious, heritage-led, regeneration scheme of more than £1.9m that will restore many of the park’s historic features, and improvements to facilities. The funding also supports a five year action plan of community engagement which will open up the site’s history to current users, and target groups who may not have thought about using the park previously.

Have you recently lost a kite on the Rec?
On Sunday our friends at Kent Kite Flyers (KKF) rescued a kite from the lime trees on the Park Rd side of the Recreation Ground. If it's yours and can describe it they would like to reunite you with it. If no one comes forward in the next couple of weeks it will be added to KKF's 'loan fleet' used to encourage people to learn to fly kites.

This could be fun.

So the flower beds look wonderful and after a bit of weeding there our lovely volunteers cleared and remulched the new hedge planted along the knee rail at the top car park.
It was lovely to see folk gathered in the shade of the cherry tree in this heat

Sorry for the late update this week. On Wednesday we continued with the epicormic growth. Planted some new plants in the "Bee Garden" thanks to a local resident for the donation. We Also did some pulling of thistles and a bit of tidying up in the flowerbeds and watered a few things that looked a bit distressed. And of course a bit of litter picking.

So ahead of next week's school holiday as well as the epicormic growth we cleaned the children's play park.

So this week like last week we watered and tidied the flower beds and tackled are old favourite, epicormic growth on the lime trees.
We also rediscovered our cob nut bushes, they are currently very tiny. And to cheer you all up I've added some pictures of some of the flowers you can currently find in the rec.

Ok, sorry just realised I did not post anything last week. Not because we didn't do anything just that I wasn't there and forgot the photos I was sent!
So this week firstly thank you to the lovely resident, you know who you are, who donated a number of plants that are now gracing the new iris bed, hopefully this will bring some colour to the bank.
So we finished the creation of the new bed, we planted the plants watered in lots of places including the new wild flower circle opposite The Market Inn, (who ever heard of power washing a flower bed?) but it's a lot easier to use a jet washer on a low setting than lugging multiple watering cans down from the pavilion.
Hopefully the Green Flag Judges will find us worthy again when they visit soon.

So this week we litter picked, of course, did some more edging to the flower borders, planted a new clematis by the old Holly tree, created a wild flower circle under the cherry tree near the Market Inn, and defined the extent of the new iris bed.
It's a shame someone chose to remove the spurge we planted there!
