Something a little bit different today but I couldn’t resist sharing this lovely photo of my big bad boss and brother Will, with his beautiful 4 kids from a fun family Shepherd Neame cricket match at Mount Ephraim last night. The sunset was also incredible. And it’s also his birthday today so, happy birthday Will 😉

While we know many local areas are dealing with water shortages today, we’re very grateful that the gardens remain open as normal and our water supply is unaffected.

If you’re looking for somewhere cool, calm and restorative, the gardens are looking particularly beautiful right now. The shade of the arboretum, the rock and water gardens, and the lakeside paths offer a peaceful escape from the heat — with plenty of spots to pause, breathe and enjoy the sound of water and birdsong.

Thinking especially of those nearby who are without water today and hoping services are restored quickly.

The gardens are taking on a different kind of beauty in this week’s sunshine ☀️🌿

While the flowers continue to shine, this hot weather has made the cooler corners of the gardens feel especially magical — from shady walks through the arboretum and along the beautiful holly tree-lined avenue, to the peaceful rock garden, sparkling lake and calming water garden.

The mature trees are providing plenty of welcome shade, while the herbaceous borders continue to fill out beautifully with lupins, alliums and soft clouds of thalictrum adding colour and movement throughout the grounds.

It’s the perfect week for a slower wander, an ice cream in the shade and a moment to enjoy the gardens at their summer best.

Thanks to Chris Lacey Photography for the fabulous photos!

To celebrate World Topiary Day, Tony and I recently joined the Poodling Around podcast to talk about the history of the topiary at Mount Ephraim Gardens and how it has evolved over the years into such a distinctive feature of the gardens today.

It was a lovely opportunity to share some of the stories behind the yew shapes and discuss the role topiary plays within the wider garden.

After a rather damp and chilly week, the forecast is finally looking brighter and warmer — and the gardens are loving the recent rain 🌿

The rhododendrons are still looking spectacular around the lake, with their reflections shimmering in the water, while the lupins in the herbaceous border are now bursting into colour. In the Millennium Rose Garden, the alliums and delicate thalictrum are adding beautiful texture and movement, and pockets of cistus are flowering throughout the grounds too.

Everywhere you look, the gardens are incredibly lush and green right now, with so many different shades of fresh spring growth emerging week by week.

A perfect time for a wander while everything is looking so vibrant ✨

The rhododendrons are looking particularly good down by the lake at the moment, with plenty of colour now coming through across the banks.

A walk down to the water is well worth it just now, especially in the sunshine, with bright pinks, purples and whites all reflected across the lake.

If you’re visiting today or this coming week, don’t miss them while they’re at their best.
