This week’s garden highlights 🌿

After a mix of sunshine and rain, the gardens are bursting with summer interest.

🌹 Climbing roses are putting on a beautiful display throughout the grounds.

🌾 Tony’s new “Meadow Ripples” mowing experiment around the fountain is creating quite a talking point.

🌸 The terraces, steps and beds above the tennis court are looking immaculate, with the red roses at the foot of the steps absolutely stealing the show.

🌿 The maze is growing fast and beginning to reveal its future shape.

🪨 The rock garden is all about texture right now, with newts and even tiny shrimp thriving in the pools.

🌲 The brainchild of Stefan Jordan, we are also trying our hand at grafting Eastern Hemlock onto Western Hemlock – watch this space!

🌿 And the giant gunnera by the lake never fails to amaze us as it springs back to life after winter.

🌹 This week in the gardens, the roses are putting on a truly spectacular show.

The Millennium Rose Garden is looking stunning, while beautiful white and purple roses line the back drive to the house. Below the house, the terraced beds are filled with vibrant red, yellow, orange and white blooms, and elegant white roses are climbing the walls and terraces near the tennis court.

Wherever you wander, you’ll find pockets of roses in full flower, accompanied by drifts of foxgloves bringing colour and height throughout the gardens. The herbaceous border is also bursting with irises, lupins and ornamental poppies.

While the dry weather has left the lawns looking more like August than early June, the trees are a wonderful contrast, with every shade of green on display across the gardens.

It’s a beautiful time to visit and enjoy the colours, scents and atmosphere of early summer. 🌿✨

Something a little bit different today but I couldn’t resist sharing this lovely photo of my big bad boss and brother Will, with his beautiful 4 kids from a fun family Shepherd Neame cricket match at Mount Ephraim last night. The sunset was also incredible. And it’s also his birthday today so, happy birthday Will 😉

While we know many local areas are dealing with water shortages today, we’re very grateful that the gardens remain open as normal and our water supply is unaffected.

If you’re looking for somewhere cool, calm and restorative, the gardens are looking particularly beautiful right now. The shade of the arboretum, the rock and water gardens, and the lakeside paths offer a peaceful escape from the heat — with plenty of spots to pause, breathe and enjoy the sound of water and birdsong.

Thinking especially of those nearby who are without water today and hoping services are restored quickly.
