🌊 World Ocean Day at Landguard

Let’s celebrate World Ocean Day by shining a light on the incredible coastline we’re lucky to care for here at Landguard Nature Reserve 💙

From our shingle beaches to the rich waters of the Stour and Orwell estuaries, Landguard is home to a whole world of coastal wildlife: shorebirds, seals, seaweeds, shellfish, and the tiny creatures that keep our oceans thriving.

Every tide brings new life, new stories, and new reasons to protect this precious place.

Today is a reminder that healthy oceans start with local action.

Thank you to everyone who helps us keep Landguard lovely: volunteers, visitors, and our wider community!

🌿 Our Ranger team Is growing, and so is our protection of Landguard.

We’re delighted to share that the Landguard Ranger team has expanded this season. With more Rangers on duty, we’re increasing patrols across the reserve to support visitors, protect wildlife, and ensure the site’s Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) is followed during this crucial time of year.

The cordons are now in place to safeguard nesting Ringed Plovers and protect the shingle dwelling plants. To help them thrive:

🐾 No dogs are allowed on the beach in front of the cordons, on or off lead, until the end of September.

🎣 No fishing is permitted in this same area during the breeding season.

Dogs are still welcome elsewhere on the reserve:

🐾On a lead: on the grassland beyond the cordons

🐾Off lead: in the northern section by Manor Terrace

💩 Please remember to collect and dispose of dog fouling responsibly. It protects wildlife, keeps the reserve safe for everyone, and is a requirement under the PSPO.

🪁 No kite flying, drone flying, or metal detecting is allowed anywhere on the site. These activities cause significant disturbance to wildlife and can damage sensitive habitats.

🔥 A vital reminder: No fires or BBQs are allowed anywhere on Landguard, including the beach. The reserve is extremely dry and fragile, and even small fires pose a serious risk. Smoke and flames also disturb nesting birds and other wildlife.

With your support, and with our expanded Ranger team on patrol, we can give Landguard’s wildlife the space and safety it needs throughout the summer.

Thank you for helping us care for this special place!

☀️ This beautiful, hot bank holiday weekend, we know many of you will plan to visit Landguard beach! 🌊

As you pack your bags, please remember that Landguard is a uniquely fragile and important site for biodiversity. This naturally dry habitat is currently home to many vulnerable species, including rare ground-nesting birds who are right in the middle of their vital breeding season. 🥚🐣

To help us protect this special place and its wildlife, please keep these safety and conservation rules in mind:

❌ No Fires or BBQs: Due to the naturally dry landscape, the risk of wildfire is incredibly high. For everyone's safety, fires and BBQs are strictly prohibited anywhere on the reserve.

🚫 Beach Cordon Restrictions:
To give parent birds the peace and space they need to raise their chicks, no dogs (on or off lead) and no fishing are permitted on the beach directly in front of the cordons.

🐾 Everywhere Else:

If you are walking your dog in permitted areas of the reserve, please keep a very close eye on them to prevent any accidental disturbance to wildlife.

Our team of Rangers will be out in full force with extra patrols taking place all weekend. We are here to chat, answer questions, and ensure everyone has a safe, enjoyable visit while keeping our wildlife protected.

Thank you for helping us look after Landguard!

Enjoy the sunshine safely. 🕶️🌿

🌿 Brown‑tail Moth Caterpillars: A Quick Seasonal Reminder

As we head into the warmer months, you may spot brown‑tail moth caterpillars on vegetation around the reserve. They’re a natural part of our coastal ecosystem, but their tiny hairs can cause itchy skin rashes and irritation for both people and pets.

To keep everyone comfortable:

🐛 Avoid touching the caterpillars or their nests
🐕‍🦺 Keep dogs from sniffing or brushing against infested shrubs
🧼 If you do come into contact, wash skin and clothing promptly

🌼 Thank you for looking after yourselves, and our wildlife.

Celebrating a Century of Wonder: Sir David Attenborough at 100 🌍✨

Today marks a monumental milestone as the legendary Sir David Attenborough turns 100 years old! 🎂🙌

For decades, his voice has been the heartbeat of natural history, guiding us through the deep oceans 🌊 and the densest jungles 🌴, teaching us to cherish the fragile beauty of our planet. 🌏💙

We wish the legendary naturalist and broadcaster a wonderful milestone filled with the same curiosity, wonder, and respect for nature that he has shared with us. 🦒🦅

His voice and passion have inspired generations to protect our planet. 🛡️🌱

While Sir David has explored the farthest corners of the globe, his message has always been that nature is something to be protected, even right on our doorstep. 🏡🌼

Local wildlife is just as important, and places like Landguard Nature Reserve in Felixstowe are vital. 🐚🌾

Why Landguard is our little piece of the "Attenborough Spirit":

It’s a rare coastal gem: 💎 Just as Sir David highlights the importance of unique ecosystems, Landguard’s vegetated shingle is one of the rarest habitats in the UK. 🌊🌱

Felixstowe's very own 'Life of Birds': 🦜 Landguard is the perfect spot for birdwatching. From Wheatears to Goldcrests, the reserve serves as a crucial pitstop for weary travelers crossing the North Sea. ✈️🐦

Biodiversity in action: 🦋 Even in a relatively small area, the "Attenborough effect" is visible here. Landguard hosts hundreds of thriving moths, birds, bats, butterflies, and coastal flora. 🦇🌸

How to celebrate today:

1. Visit Landguard: 🚶‍♂️ Take a walk through the reserve and see if you can spot some of our local residents. 🦀🔭

2. Tune In: 📺 Watch the BBC’s special centenary programming to see highlights from Sir David’s incredible career. 🎞️🦁

3. Make a Change: 🌿 In honor of his 100th birthday, consider one small act for nature. Whether it's planting a pollinator friendly flower or picking up a piece of litter on the beach. 🌻🗑️

Happy 100th Birthday, Sir David! Thank you for showing us the world. 🦋✨🐢

🌿 The Cordons Are Up: Preparing for Ringed Plover Nesting Season at Landguard

Today with the help of Harwich Haven Authority, Felixstowe Port, Reserve volunteers and Landguard Bird Observatory, the post‑and‑rope cordons went up on the Nature Reserve, marking the start of one of the most important moments in our year.....the Ringed Plover nesting season.

These small, charismatic waders choose Landguard’s rare vegetated shingle to raise their families. But their nesting strategy makes them incredibly vulnerable: instead of building a traditional nest, they simply scrape a shallow hollow in the shingle and lay their beautifully camouflaged eggs right on the ground, making them almost impossible for people and dogs to see.

From April to September, these fragile nesting areas need space and quiet. That’s why cordons are installed around key breeding areas, helping adult plovers incubate their eggs without disturbance. Even a brief interruption from people, dogs, kites, drones or fishing activity can cause adults to abandon their nests, leaving eggs exposed to predators and temperature changes. As chicks hatch, they must feed on the open beach, where they remain extremely sensitive to disturbance.

What this means for visitors?

To give the birds the best chance of success:

🐾Dogs, whether on or off lead, are **not permitted inside the cordons or on the beach directly in front of them** during the breeding season.

🎣Fishing should not take place in front of cordoned areas, as it can disturb the birds and attract predators.

These areas are clearly signposted and regularly patrolled.

🐾Dogs can still enjoy the northern section of the reserve off lead, and may be walked on lead to the landward side of the cordons.

🎣Fishing remains welcome in the northern section and along the river.

Recent enforcement has shown why these protections matter. In 2025, four Fixed Penalty Notices were issued for entering cordoned areas or allowing dogs inside them. In one case, a couple with off‑lead dogs took part in a community resolution, including a donation to the Landguard Trust and an educational meeting about the importance of the PSPO. These measures help safeguard wildlife and ensure everyone can enjoy the reserve responsibly.

Ringed Plovers are a conservation priority in the UK, and with your support, we hope these much‑loved birds will continue to breed at Landguard for many years to come.

🌿 Huge thanks to our Litter-Less-Landguard volunteers!🌿

A massive shout‑out to the brilliant volunteers from Landguard Nature Reserve, Landguard Fort , and Felixstowe Museum for their fantastic collaborative effort during yesterday’s Great British Spring Clean.

This committed team of litter heroes spent the morning collecting rubbish across the whole Landguard peninsula, including the Nature Reserve, beaches, car parks, Viewpoint Road, Fort, and Museum grounds.

Together they gathered 16 bags of litter, weighing in at 28 kg, plus several larger items that went straight into the wheelie bins. The haul included:

• McDonald’s packaging
• Fish and chip wrappers
• Plastic bottles
• Drinks cans
• Glass bottles
• Sweet wrappers and crisp packets
• Cigarette butts
• Ring pulls
• Tin foil and other metal pieces
• Discarded vapes and packaging
• Rope, fishing net and fishing wire
• Wet wipes
• Poo bags
• Shoes and clothing
• And hundreds of tiny plastic fragments from "your guess is as good as mine!"

Their hard work helps keep Landguard beautiful, safe, and wildlife‑friendly and we are incredibly grateful for their dedication.

👏 Thank you, team. You make a real difference. 👏
