🌊 24 Hours That Changed History: The Story of D-Day

Today is June 6th. But if things had gone to plan, the invasion would have happened two days ago.

On June 4th, a massive summer storm lashed the English Channel. General Eisenhower had to make an agonising decision—postpone the invasion by 24 hours. A longer delay meant waiting weeks for the right tides, risking the entire secret.

When the weather broke on June 6, 1944, the largest amphibious invasion in history was launched:

The Sea: Nearly 7,000 ships and landing craft crossed the channel—the largest fleet ever assembled.

The Sky: Over 11,500 aircraft filled the skies to protect the beaches and drop paratroopers.

The Land: 156,000 Allied troops and 20,000 vehicles forced their way onto a heavily fortified 50-mile stretch of Normandy coastline.

The foothold was secured, but the cost was immense. More than 4,400 Allied personnel lost their lives on that single first day.

Today, we look out at our own peaceful coastline and remember the bravery, the agonising wait, and the ultimate sacrifice of those who crossed the channel 82 years ago today.

Lest we forget. 🇬🇧🇨🇦🇺🇸

🎖️ From Felixstowe to Normandy: Landguard’s Untold D-Day Story 🎖️
Today, on the anniversary of the 1944 D-Day landings, we look back at the incredible part Landguard Fort played in the second wave of the invasion.
While the south coast gets a lot of the spotlight, our spit of shingle was a vital supply hub, loading tanks, vehicles, and essential supplies bound for the beaches of France.

⚓ The Secret Under Your Feet
Ever walked the wide concrete road through the Landguard Nature Reserve? You’re walking directly on WWII history. It was laid specifically as a heavy-duty embarkation road to get massive tanks out to the waiting ships. What’s now a peaceful wildlife haven was once a roaring launchpad for liberation.

The historic photograph shows the immense scale of the Landing Craft Tanks (LCTs) unloading armour onto the Normandy shores.

🚢 A Living Survivor in Portsmouth
One of the very ships loaded right here at Felixstowe actually survived! LCT 7074 loaded up 10 British tanks on our shores before setting sail for Gold Beach. After an incredible restoration, this legendary vessel is now proudly on display at The D-Day Story in Portsmouth—the last surviving intact LCT of its kind.

Next time you walk the concrete path, take a look at the waves and remember the brave souls who set sail from this very spot.
We will remember them. ❤️

On a bright day, 26th May, we honoured a man whose vision helped shape the future of Landguard Fort.
We unveiled a plaque commemorating Founder Trustee Dave Wood, a tireless champion of the Fort and its history. The plaque was unveiled by Jenny Riddell‑Carpenter MP, joined by Felixstowe Mayor Darren Aitchison and Dave’s family, who shared in this moving moment.
Following the unveiling, Jenny officially opened our new Timeline Exhibition — a carefully curated journey through the Fort’s entire history, filled with artefacts, photographs, and stories that bring the past to life.
Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate Dave’s legacy and to the volunteers, staff, and supporters who made the exhibition possible. If you haven’t yet visited, the Timeline Exhibition is now open — come and discover the history that makes Landguard Fort so unique.

Yesterday was a very special day here at Landguard Fort 💛
We were honoured to welcome Jenny Riddell‑Carpenter MP to Landguard Fort for a celebration of heritage, community and the volunteers who keep our history alive.

A particularly poignant moment was the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, a tribute to Dave Wood (1947–2023) — one of our founding trustees (and fortification historian) whose passion helped shape the Fort into the landmark it is today. Members of Dave’s family joined us on site, standing alongside volunteers, supporters and friends who continue to build on the legacy he began.

Jenny Riddell‑Carpenter MP also joined Felixstowe’s new Mayor, Darren Aitchison, to officially open our brand‑new Timeline exhibition — an immersive journey through the whole of Landguard's history, from coastal defence through to the stories that shaped our community.

A huge thank you to everyone that supports the Fort, shares its stories, and gives their time to protect this incredible historic place.

History lives here — because of you.
