Momentum Greenwich is a local network of people and organisations that will continue the energy and enthusiasm of Labour's 2017 General Election Campaign

What does Momentum want to do? Organise in every town, city and village to create a mass movement for real progressive change. Make Labour a more democratic party, with the policies and collective will to implement them in government. Bring tog

ether individuals and groups in our communities and workplaces to campaign and organise on the issues that matter to us. How will Momentum do this? Organise events, rallies, meetups and policy consultations to encourage mass mobilisation for a more democratic, equal and decent society. Encourage those inspired by Jeremy Corbyn's campaign to get involved with the Labour Party. Assist members in making their voice heard in Labour Party debates. Facilitate and coordinate people to build new and support existing organisations that can make concrete improvements to people's lives. Through these actions, we aim to demonstrate on a micro level how collective action and Labour values can transform our society for the better. Who runs it? Formed as a successor to the Corbyn for Labour leader campaign, Momentum is in the process of setting up governance arrangements to represent its supporters amongst the Labour Party membership as well as the wider social movement which is springing up. As it grows, Momentum will develop democratic governance structures at every level of the network. What is the relationship between Labour and Jeremy Corbyn? Momentum is the successor entity to the Jeremy Corbyn for Labour Leader campaign but it is independent of the Labour Party's leadership. It will work with everyone who supports Jeremy's aim of creating a more fair, equal and democratic society. To contact us please email [email protected] or go to our twitter account

The brand of politics now dominant is Blairism circa 2005, when the leadership became obsessed with marketising Britain’s public services.

Owen Jones on Labour's reshuffle.

It’s 2023, not 1997, and the problems facing the UK can’t be solved by yet more privatisation, writes Guardian columnist Owen Jones

The Labour reshuffle leaves Starmer surrounded by yes-men.

Today, policy is constrained by the self-imposed straitjacket of arbitrary fiscal rules, political caution and an emphasis on unity and discipline that means any independent thought or even the mildest of dissent cannot be tolerated, let alone embraced.

Andrew Fisher on Labour's reshuffle.

Even the mildest of dissent is not tolerated, let alone embraced. Labour needs radicalism

Great accounts of past May Day events in Greenwich and South London from Past Tense blog.

====

In 1905 ... there was a ‘tremendous gathering’ in Woolwich’s Beresford Square for a May Day demonstration sponsored by Woolwich Independent Labour Party and Woolwich and District Trades and Labour Council.

In 1920, at the Woolwich Arsenal, the Shop Stewards wrote to the management informing them that the workers there had ‘decided to celebrate the First of May as a Labour Holiday’.

Many of them joined a demo on Dartford Heath [from] Woolwich, Welling, Erith, Bexley Heath, Dartford and Crayford.

It featured the Woolwich Labour Protection League drum and fife band and songs from the Woolwich Socialist Sunday School.

Thumping pay rises end years of strikes on the Woolwich Ferry

'This agreement would not have been possible without the steely determination of the workforce and their preparedness for strike action.

'It’s more evidence that Unite is continuing to deliver better jobs, terms and conditions for its members.'

Years of strikes and industrial unrest on the Woolwich Ferry are at an end, union bosses say, with workers given double-digit pay rises by Transport for London. Workers had complained of low pay and bullying on the free ferry, which was brought in-house by TfL in 2021 after problems under its previo...
