We are delighted to announce that Fishbourne favourite Dr Carey Fleiner will be hosting a Writing Roman Historical Fiction workshop at our Arts & Literature Festival in October!

In this this three-hour interactive session you’ll be creating Roman scenes, characters, and words, starting with discussions on effective historical fiction writing, you'll then map out a short scene or sketch using speed writing exercises, and finally you'll have the opportunity to share your masterpiece!

No experience needed, just bring your imagination and your favourite writing tools.

Dr Fleiner is currently a Senior Lecturer in Classical (Roman) History at the University of Wi******er. Her areas of research include Roman women and entertainment and sport in the Classical world as well as hands-on demos, workshops, and talks about ancient and medieval textiles and textile techniques.

Her book A Writer’s Guide to Ancient Rome (Manchester University Press, 2020) takes the reader through both sources and resources for creating historical fiction set in the Roman world.

We're delighted to be welcoming Kevin Newman to our first Arts and Literature Festival at Fishbourne Roman Palace.

Kevin is joining us to talk about his bestselling book of 2023, The Little History of Sussex, now in its second edition.

His lively, funny and interactive talk will take us on a tour through his little book and promises to teach us something new along the way!

Whether you are a visitor to the county or a die-hard Sussexian of old. Can Kevin take us through millennia of Sussex history in fourty five minutes, make us smile and answer your questions?

You'll have to be there to find out!

The talk with be 45 minutes with an extra 45 minutes for a Q&A. Copies of his book will be available to buy after the talk.

Don't forget! To celebrate Heritage Open Days 2026 - England's biggest heritage festival of history and culture - we are offering FREE ENTRY to Fishbourne Roman Palace on the 11th, 12th and 13th September 2026

Built around AD 75, it features remarkably preserved mosaics, archaeological remains, reconstructed Roman gardens, and an on-site museum.

Visit our Collections Discovery Centre on site, which is home to over 300,000 artefacts from Fishbourne and the surrounding area, and explore our latest research in the Conservation Lab and glimpse into our Sensitive and Bulk Store.

We also have a lovely cafe on site serving delicious treats, an amazing gift shop, and dogs are welcome too!

Beneath the cathedral floor lies a stunning 2nd-century Roman mosaic, thought to be part of a larger public building. Our team at Fishbourne Roman Palace recently gave this ancient piece of Chichester’s story a gentle clean to help preserve it for the future.

If seeing it inspires you to do some more history hunting, our Mosaic Bingo Trail is still up and running!

We are pleased to announce to announce that at the Council’s August meeting, our trustees approved production of the next Sussex Archaeological Collections - Volume 163.

The Sussex Archaeological Collections is a scholarly journal about the history and archaeology of Sussex.

Since 1847 it has been providing archaeologists, historians and researchers with a platform to share their discoveries and is central to our purpose as a society.

Production is progressing at a pace, and we will let you know when Volume 163 is finished. Members of The Sussex Archaeological Society receive a copy as a membership benefit and past copies are available to non-members through various channels including our gift shops.

We have some very exciting news for you!

On 9-11 October 2026 we are holding our very first Arts and Literature Festival!

The festival will feature talks and Q&As from award winning authors and historians including Lindsey Davis, Linda Proud-Smith, Andy Burnham, History with Jackson, Dr Jess Venner, Janet Pennington and Kevin Newman.

There will also be several specialist arts and crafts workshops taking place over the 3 days including needle felting, natural inks and eco brushes, and historic writing workshops.

We'll be releasing more information about the individual talks and workshops over the next few weeks so keep your eyes peeled 👀.

We've been working with Chichester Cathedral, carefully cleaning this wonderful section of mosaic, as part of their ongoing preservation work.
