It’s been a busy couple of nights for our RNLI volunteers here in Fleetwood, with shouts on both Wednesday and Thursday nights. Wednesday saw our volunteer crew paged at 10:27pm to assist in the search for an emergency locator beacon that had been triggered, alerting HM Coastguard Holyhead to a possible vessel in distress. Working from an initial possible two-mile radius, our inshore lifeboat Harbet began searching the river while our friends over the water at Barrow Lifeboat looked after the bay. The addition of HMCG helicopter Rescue 336 from Caernarfon brought specialist direction-finding equipment to bear, allowing the helicopter to find the beacon’s exact position and direct our RNLI crew there. We were pleased to discover that nobody was in distress, and the beacon was handed over to our neighbours from HM Coastguard Fleetwood. The crew returned to station at 12:15am.

Last night we launched Harbet again at 9:17pm to assist the Coastguard’s rescue team as they attended a callout on the riverbank mud. Despite very little water to work in at that point of the tide, our crew were able to work effectively thanks for the constant pace of training we keep throughout the year, bringing the situation to a good outcome.

This shout was special for one member of the ILB crew, as Nick White (better known to those of you who attend our events as DJ Nicky Flash) participated in his first shout as a member of the Fleetwood crew. Nick’s been a stalwart at RNLI Blackpool for sixteen years and a great friend to our lifeboat family in the area. It’s a real pleasure to see him take to the water here in Fleetwood.

Huge thanks to our friends at The Enchanted Forest, who were kind enough to choose us as the beneficiaries of their recent Summer Fair. Some of our RNLI volunteers had the pleasure to visit them again yesterday to collect their extremely generous donation, and we'd like to thank them for everything they do to help support our local community.

⛱️Are You Heading To The Coast Over The Summer School Summer Holiday?🛟

With warm weather forcast, many people are heading down to beaches to enjoy the sun.
Whether you’re sunbathing swimming or taking to the water it’s important to always prioritise your safety.
Our RNLI Fleetwood Water Safety team and Stormy Stan, have some important tips to help keep you safe whilst visiting the coast.

●Check the tide times and weather before heading out.

●Always try to visit a lifeguarded beach – If you can’t make it to a lifeguarded beach, learn more about your chosen beach and read local signs

●Swim between the red and yellow flags – This zone is where it is safe to swim and where the lifeguards are watching

●Check the local beach warning signs that point out specific dangers at each location, and ask for local advice.

●Take a photograph on your mobile phone of your children when you arrive at the beach, so if they become lost you can show the emergency services and they then know who they are looking for.

●Always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.

●If you are going out on the open water aways wear a PFD (Personal Flotation Device - lifejacket or buoyancy aid)

●Always carry a means of calling for help.

● If you see someone in trouble,
call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Don't risk becoming a casualty yourself.

● The sandbanks around the Fleetwood area can be dangerous! The Gullies on Fleetwood beach start to rapidly fill up approximately 1hr after low tide and the sandbanks begin to cover with the incoming tide approximately 3 hours before it reaches its highest point, cutting off raised areas with little to no warning, the tide can come in behind you without you being aware that it is coming in.

If you are unsure of when the tide comes in or which direction the tide comes in from, please do not walk out on the sands.

●Float to Live – If you find yourself in the water unexpectedly. When you feel you can, call for help or swim to safety.

🛟Today is World Drowning Prevention Day, 25th July 🛟

Half of people who drown, didn't intend on being in the water in the first place.

We’re asking you to remember one thing if you're on or around the water. If you get into difficulty

• Tilt your head back with your ears submerged
• Relax and try to breathe normally
• Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat
• It’s OK if your legs sink, we all float differently
• Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety

Speak to your loved ones about water safety today. Children and young people are particularly at risk.

This Saturday, 25th July, our friends at the Marine Hall will have the dome lit blue in support of World Drowning Prevention Day on 25 July.

The day raises awareness of the impact of drowning and highlights simple steps we can all take to stay safe around water.

🌊 Key water safety tips:

✔️ Supervise children at all times near water
✔️ Never swim alone
✔️ Choose lifeguarded beaches and swimming areas
✔️ Avoid alcohol when swimming or taking part in watersports
✔️ Wear a lifejacket or buoyancy aid where appropriate
✔️ If you get into difficulty, remember to Float to Live – lean back, relax and control your breathing

Look out for the blue illumination at Marine Hall and help spread this important water safety message.

This evening our stations RNLI flag is at half-mast following the sad news of the passing of Gary Blundell on Saturday morning, brother of RNLI Fleetwood volunteer Lifeboat Crew and Launch Authority Bunny Blundell.

Gary started his working life at sea from the age of 15, sailing for Marr & Sons on the deep sea trawlers until family life brought him working ashore as a concrete finisher.

As a mark of respect during our stations lifeboat day, our volunteer lifeboat crew along with our visiting flank stations lifeboat crews, paused for a minutes silence and scattered a white carnation from each of the lifeboats at sea in memory of Gary.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Gary's family and friends at this very sad time.
Calm seas and fair winds.
