Scottish Charity No SC020798. The Heritage Centre tells the story of Findhorn village from ancient to modern times and includes a 150 year old ice house.

Entry free The aim of this non-profit making organisation is to conserve and share with others the rich, natural and historical heritage of Findhorn . It is run solely by volunteers.

Richard reports some very special and unusual visitors to the Bay that he spotted this morning. These three large birds are Common Cranes (2 adults and a juvenile).

Their name is misleading as they are anything but common. There are fewer than 50 pairs breeding in Southern England and they are extremely rare in Northern Scotland.

The last Crane sighting in Findhorn is thought to be over 20 years ago. Richard's super photo really emphasises their size when compared with the Curlews in the foreground.

Quite a few folk gathered at the piers tonight in the hope of seeing the solar eclipse.

Despite intermittent cloud cover Richard manged to get these pics.

With dreadful wildfires so much in the news it is hard to imagine that almost 200 years ago this week, this part of Scotland faced a very different problem.

In 1829, the months of May, June and July were very hot and dry. However, on the 3rd and 4th of August, torrential rain deluged the Monaliath mountains South of Loch Ness, causing the River Findhorn to flood. This flooding was so extreme that at Randolph’s Leap near Logie, the River rose 50 feet above its normal level. Further downstream, the coastal plain between Forres and Findhorn lay under several feet of water. Local inhabitants were stranded on the rooves of their houses. Down in Findhorn, 5 fishing boats crewed by local fishermen, set sail across the flooded fields and were able to rescue both people and livestock and bring them to safety. At a later date, these gallant rescuers were presented with a commemorative silver medal. One such medal is on display in the Findhorn Heritage Centre.

Richard took this fantastic Osprey action shot yesterday afternoon. Earlier yesterday, he counted 6 Ospreys on the Bay, either fishing or perched on logs.

He says this is his largest Osprey count so far this year.

Richard reports that things are pretty quiet on the Bay at the moment. One species that is present in reasonable numbers is Shelduck with about 350 counted on the Bay in recent days. Quite a few of the birds are looking after quite large (10-14) broods of ducklings. Richard took this picture on the Mosset Burn. Many of the Shelduck will be leaving for North Germany at the end of next month where they will moult before returning later in the year to overwinter.

Richard reports an unusual visitor to the Bay. He spotted this Spoonbill in the centre of the Bay a couple of days ago and it was still around the next morning. Although these unusual birds are seen regularly in East Anglia and Dorset the last sighting here in Findhorn Bay was over 3 years ago.

Richard reckons maybe this one has come up here to escape the current heatwave down South!

Lots of activity in Findhorn as we get our Heritage Centre and Historic Icehouse ready for this season's opening on Saturday 2nd May.

During May and September we are open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons only, whilst in June, July and August we are open every afternoon. Opening times are 2pm to 4.30pm. This year marks the centenary of the opening of the old Findhorn Golf Course and we will have a special display in the Heritage Centre to mark the occasion.

It’s that time of year again. The first Ospreys have arrived bang on schedule. Richard took this photo yesterday evening which shows a newly arrived bird fishing near the piers.
