Lochaber Geopark

Lochaber Geopark Lochaber Geopark in the Highlands of Scotland explores the extraordinary geology and the story behind

Lochaber Geopark encompasses an area of 4,468Km2, including the Small Isles (Rum, Muck, Eigg and Canna) and is renowned for its spectacular scenery. It is this landscape that makes Lochaber Geopark the ultimate playground sculpted by nature. The region is famous for its outdoor adventure activities, climbing, skiing and biking to name but a few. But it also has some of the most diverse wildlife in

the UK, and one of the most complex, interesting and significant geological histories of any area. Lochaber Geopark aims to bring these aspects to the fore, by providing interpretation panels through out the region, creating routes and information guides for the area that let visitors understand the landscape they see along their journey, and through our Visitors Centres. We also play a role in protecting rare places in the area such as SSSI's (Sights of Special Scientific Interest), and encouraging local business to work together so as to better the economy and standard of living in the area.

P2’s at Caol Primary School have been studying dinosaurs. Lochaber Geopark’s STEM ambassador and staff geologist went along to pay them a visit. We learnt how dinosaurs evolved, where their name originated, discovered some fun facts on particular species and discussed the theories that may have led to their extinction (with experiments).

Thank you for asking us to come and visit. A well-behaved class of good learners!

Can you tell what animals in the drawings are dinosaurs?

https://www.scottishgeology.com/hughmiller/

"The Hugh Miller Writing Competition carries the name of one of Scotland’s most remarkable geologists, Hugh Miller (1802-1856), and aims to honour his legacy by inspiring new, original prose and poetry on the theme of Scotland’s geoheritage. This year, poetry and prose entries are invited that are inspired by one or more of the “51 Best Places to See Scotland’s Geology.” The list, compiled by a panel of experts, aims to help you find out more about Scotland’s geological heritage, and guide you to the best places to see different elements of the story laid out in our country’s beautiful landscapes.
