This week, S1–2 pupils from Kilchuimen Academy took part in a Sustainability Week filled with hands-on learning and outdoor experiences.

The week began with a session led by Kez from the The Lovat where pupils explored foraging plants and flowers around the school grounds before using their ingredients to make summer mocktails.

Later in the week, pupils visited Dundreggan Rewilding Centre. They worked in the tree nursery collecting and planting seeds, explored the centre, and learned more about rewilding, including native species, habitats, and deer management.

In the afternoon, pupils learned about fire safety and the dangers of wildfires before making their own fires and cooking bannock outdoors. Followed by a Gaelic session where pupils learned more about local heritage and culture.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in providing such a valuable and memorable experience for our young people.

Seven pupils from Kinlochleven High School spent last week out on the Braveheart Fury trail, taking part in a hands‑on outdoor week delivered by LOCHABER TRAILS ASSOCIATION as part of the new From Trail Concept to Enduro Event pilot.
Armed with shovels, rakes and spades - and battling through rain and midges - the group got properly stuck in. They learned how real mountain bike trails are planned, built and maintained alongside DMBinS, Forestry & Land Scotland and CRC Trails.
Their work forms part of the upgrade to Braveheart Fury, which will feature as the final stage of the Scottish Enduro Series & Championships in September 2026. A brilliant start to a programme that’s building confidence, skills and future pathways for young people in the West Highlands.

Ardnamurchan High School S3 students had a fantastic visit to DALILEA FARM on the bank of Loch Shiel this week. Not only did they witness a baby lamb entering the world, they also discovered how modern farmers protect biodiversity while managing livestock and caring for the land.
From animal welfare to sustainable land use, students saw their Biology learning come to life in the most hands‑on way.
Huge thanks to the Dalilea team for being so welcoming and inspiring. Experiences like this open young people’s eyes to new pathways and help them build confidence in their future.

Thank you West Highland Museum for our visit with Lochaber High students.
We learned about the various career roles, how the museum takes in artefacts and protect them before cleaning, investigating and putting things on display.
Students then had a guided tour, stopping in each area to hear tales and have discovery time.
What an inspiring and interesting visit.

Thanks to The Scottish Association for Marine Science for a fantastic Girls in Physics day for students from Lochaber High, Ardnamurchan High School, mallaighigh and Kinlochleven 3-18 Campus
Experts in Oceanology, Diving and Robotics shared their knowledge and set tasks for students to learn more about these marine science areas. The tasks ‘earned’ points to help young women around the world to be able to study physics.
Students are now more aware of the many career paths within this field.

Plockton High School S2 students got a firsthand look at how remote communities don't just survive, but actually thrive through sheer grit, collaboration, and creativity.
and what makes these places so special for young people looking at future careers.

Glenelg is the perfect living classroom for this. It really highlights the idea that in rural areas, business isn’t just about competition—it’s about community.
The trip showed how diverse the options actually are. To succeed here, employers look for people who are adaptable and multi-skilled.

The Glenelg Inn offers careers in hospitality management, culinary arts, tourism marketing, and customer relations. Working here requires excellent people skills and the ability to make visitors feel at home.
The Original Glenelg-Skye Ferry provides unique opportunities in marine engineering, seamanship, tourism operations, and heritage preservation.

In isolated areas, businesses don't operate in a vacuum. The relationship between the Inn and the Ferry is a perfect example. The ferry brings tourists directly over from Skye, who then visit the Inn for a meal or a stay. In turn, the Inn recommends the unique ferry experience to their guests.

By supporting each other, local businesses create a sustainable eco-system that keeps the local economy alive.
The story of the Skye Turntable Ferry is an inspiring lesson in community ownership.
When the ferry was threatened with redundancy, the community didn't give up. They formed a social enterprise to buy and run it.
This proved to the students that profit isn't the only driver of business—preserving heritage, maintaining vital transport links, and community pride are just as valuable.

Success in places like Glenelg takes more than just a good business plan. It requires community engagement, passion, and a willingness to work together to put a remote area on the map as a must-visit tourist destination.

Our S1 pupils from Plockton High School recently enjoyed an enriching and educational visit to the historic Armadale Castle, Gardens & Museum of the Isles, Skye The day was packed with discovery, bridging the gap between local history, environmental science, and future career opportunities.
The day began with a deep dive into the past at the Museum of the Isles. Pupils explored the rich history and heritage of the estate, learning about the powerful Clan Donald and the wider history of the Highlands and Islands. The interactive museum provided a fantastic window into how the estate shaped, and was shaped by, generations of local history.
Stepping outside into the magnificent grounds, the group gained a fascinating insight into horticulture. Pupils learned first-hand what it takes to maintain and preserve such vast, beautiful gardens year-round. From understanding plant care to managing diverse ecosystems, it was an eye-opening look at the hard work, planning, and science that goes into estate management.
A key focus of the visit was encouraging our S1s to look ahead to life after school. The trip highlighted a diverse range of career paths available right on our doorstep.
Pupils were challenged to think about the essential skill sets they will need to develop over the coming years to succeed in these fields, such as teamwork, problem-solving, communication, and adaptability.
Overall, it was a highly successful day that beautifully connected classroom learning with real-world history and future career pathways. A huge thank you to the staff Armadale Castle, Gardens & Museum of the Isles, Skye for hosting our pupils so warmly.

This week Mallaig High School senior students received a detailed workshop to enhance their presentation skills. The session advised students how to create relevant presentations, what skills are required to present to a room and hold your audience's attention. Skills like these are key for students to advance into the workforce, build their portfolios and confidence too. West Highland Chamber of Commerce DYW West Highland

Thanks to the Highland Cinema for a fantastic insight into the hospitality industry for students from Lochaber High.
Working in small groups students learned and experienced meet and greet welcomes, taking orders, making hot drinks, waiting tables and clearing up. We also visited areas behind the scenes such as taking cinema bookings, popcorn making, into the kitchen, stock room and the projector room.
Staff were so welcoming and willing to share their career paths into the Highland Cinema.
