Ruth Davidson has urged voters to back Douglas Lumsden MSP as a local champion for oil and gas by voting for the Scottish Conservatives at the upcoming Aberdeen South by-election.

The former Scottish Conservative leader joined Douglas on the campaign trail as the party aims to win the constituency when the vote takes place on June 18.

Alongside dozens of supporters, Ruth spoke to residents with Douglas on the doors in Bieldside to emphasise that the Scottish Conservatives are the only party that can defeat the SNP.

She warned that a vote for Reform is a vote for the SNP after the Scottish Conservatives narrowly missed out on winning Holyrood’s Aberdeen Deeside and North Kincardine seat by just 1,244 votes earlier this month.

Ruth said Aberdeen has been suffocated by the SNP’s anti oil and gas policies for far too long and urgent change was needed.

Former Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson said: β€œIt was great to be in Aberdeen South with Douglas Lumsden to speak to residents who are sick and tired of their priorities being ignored by the SNP.

β€œThe public’s message was clear: the SNP have betrayed the people of Aberdeen South and our vital oil and gas sector.

β€œDouglas, who spent 25 years in the industry, is focussed on the issues that matter to local people and would make a leading champion for oil and gas in Aberdeen.

β€œAberdeen is being suffocated by the SNP’s presumption against new oil and gas fields, while Labour wants to ban all new licences in the North Sea.

β€œAs we saw in the Scottish Parliament election for this area earlier this month, a vote for Reform or anyone else risks letting the SNP win here.

β€œThat is why only Douglas Lumsden and the Scottish Conservatives can beat the SNP at the Aberdeen South by-election on June 18.”

Scottish Conservative candidate for Aberdeen South, Douglas Lumsden, said: β€œIt was fantastic to have Ruth, Russell and so many party members out with me in Aberdeen South.

β€œResidents are telling us they want change from the SNP, who have failed to back our oil and gas sector, and are destroying our city centre with bus gates and LEZs.

β€œPro-UK voters must unite around the Scottish Conservatives on June 18 to beat the SNP and ensure they elect me as an MP who will champion the oil and gas industry every single day.”

It’s our favourite day on the Calendar here at the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses so much so that we think it should be a public holiday!

Judging by the size of our lighthouse Breakfast Teacup we think the Light-keepers would agree! We think it must be the Victorian equivalent to a Sports Direct Mug.

Go on. Have a cup! And make it Fair Trade!

Drivers across Aberdeenshire are being advised to take extra care as a new programme of road works gets underway.

Aberdeenshire Council has begun its 2026 surface dressing programme across the north-east, helping to maintain and extend the life of the region’s road network.

While this essential work improves road safety and durability in the long term by sealing surfaces and boosting skid resistance, there may be short-term changes for drivers to be aware of.

Following treatment, loose chippings will be present on the road surface for a period of time. Although roads are swept several times, it can take a few days for the stones to fully bed in. During this time:

⚠️Drive at or below the signed speed limits
⚠️Leave extra space between you and the vehicle ahead
⚠️Take extra care when braking, steering or cornering

Driving too fast can displace chippings, increasing the risk of skidding or potential damage to vehicles.

Slow, steady traffic actually helps the process by pressing the chippings into the surface and ensuring a longer-lasting repair.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation while these important works are carried out to keep Aberdeenshire’s roads in good condition.

πŸš” Joint Working Success in Fraserburgh 🚬

Trading Standards and Police Scotland, working in partnership, have intercepted and seized illegal ci******es and to***co with an estimated street value of Β£5,000 in Fraserburgh today.

Illicit to***co poses serious risks β€” these products are unregulated and may contain higher levels of harmful substances, unknown ingredients, or even contaminants, making them potentially more dangerous than legal products. They are also often sold cheaply, making them more accessible to children and young people.

This operation highlights our ongoing commitment to tackling the illicit to***co trade, which undermines legitimate businesses, damages public health, and is often linked to wider criminal activity.

We will continue to work closely with our partners to protect communities and keep unsafe, illegal products off our streets.

If you have concerns about the sale of illicit to***co, you can report this anonymously to [email protected] or via Consumer Advice Scotland.

Applications are now open for the Fraserburgh BIG Ideas Grant Fund 2026, a new initiative designed to strengthen the town centre by helping to bring back into use vacant commercial premises.

The Β£25,000 fund administered by Aberdeenshire Council will offer grants to help individuals, businesses and community groups with innovative ideas which will help transform vacant properties, attract visitors and generate new economic activity in the town centre.

Building on the success of the BIG Ideas programme previously delivered in Banff and Macduff which was shortlisted as a finalist in the national SURF Awards 2025, Fraserburgh BIG Ideas aims to tackle key challenges such as rising vacancy rates and fluctuating footfall by empowering local people to shape the future of their town.
