Visitors to RSPB Loch of Strathbeg may have noticed that there has been work on the island in front of the visitor centre.

It has been getting a revamp to improve the nesting habitat for the common terns and black-headed gulls that nest there. As despite our best efforts the vegetation was taking over. Once completed it will provide more attractive nesting sites for the birds.

Although making good progress, this work will continue over the next few weeks so there will be still some disturbance related to this work, please bare with us!

We hosted a small but mighty group of volunteers from Diageo in Elgin at RSPB Loch Spynie this week. 💪

Some areas of the informal paths around the site had been getting very muddy with the volume of footfall and with their help with shovelling and wheelbarrowing a lot of hardcore, the path will be much more easily passable. They also helped with raking up cut vegetation in an area that is managed for wildflowers.

With the group we also were able to explore the woodland and talk about the management at the reserve - even spotting a red squirrel!

Thank you - your effort meant a heavy job was completed in one morning!

There are still spaces available for our Holiday Club at RSPB Loch of Strathbeg!

We will be working alongside the Aberdeenshire Council Ranger Service with sessions open to anyone aged 14 to 18 who wants to spend time outdoors, learn how a nature reserve works, or get stuck in and learn bushcraft skills.

Aberdeen & District RSPB Members Group. Tuesday, the 13th of October, sees the beginning of our winter programme of talks. We will be at the Zoology Building, University of Aberdeen, Tillydrone Avenue, AB24 2TZ, for a 19:30 start.
The speaker is Roy Atkins from Speyside Wildlife holiday company, who will be speaking to the group about Highland wildlife.
As always, all are welcome to attend, including non-members RSPB members. Tea/coffee and home bakes will be available at the interval (£2) and there will be a raffle and book sale to raise funds for the local group.
