Green doesn’t always mean nature.

A landscape can look beautiful, tidy and healthy but be almost completely silent.

Real nature is messy. It’s hedgerows, insects, wildflowers, seeds, birdsong and life at every level.

You don’t need acres of land to make a difference for nature.

Map of Dreams pledgee Alan Cockerill has a garden just 40 feet long, with a magnificent old oak tree opposite his home.

And yet this tiny patch has become a haven for wildlife — with around 50 goldfinches visiting, alongside blue t**s, great t**s, nuthatches, woodpeckers and even birds of prey.

It’s a beautiful reminder that nature doesn’t need perfection.

It just needs space.

A garden. A balcony. A verge. An old tree left standing.

Imagine what could happen if we all gave a little bit back. 🌳

What is an ancient tree worth?

Across the world, Indigenous cultures have long recognised that nature is not simply a resource to be used, but something with value and rights of its own.

Standing beneath this magnificent Caucasian elm, Hugh reflects on Matthew Bird’s fight for tree rights — and on why these extraordinary living beings deserve our protection.

We protect our schools.
We protect our hospitals.
