A new fund to support eligible households who are struggling with the cost of heating oil has today (Wednesday 1 April) been launched in Cumberland.

The price of kerosene โ€“ the fuel used for heating oil - has been especially affected by the recent conflict in the Middle East and has risen faster than other fuels such as petrol and gas.

The Government recently announced a targeted support package for low-income families which is to be distributed by local councils.

We can now confirm that its Heating Oil Support Fund is open for applications from eligible lowโ€‘income households who use heating oil as their primary source of heating. Cumberlandโ€™s share of the national support package is ยฃ370,000.

The Precept is the portion of your Council Tax that stays local to fund Parish Council activities. While this yearโ€™s figure shows a significant percentage increase compared to 2025, it remains lower than every other year in the last five.

Last year (2025โ€“26), the Parish Council used a one-off surplus of reserves to "subsidise" the budget. This resulted in an unusually low charge for residents. Now that those specific reserves have been utilised, primarily by a special election, the 2026โ€“27 Precept has returned to a standard level to ensure Parish Council activities remain fully funded.
