Yesterday’s scenes in Spain, where tens of thousands of illegal migrants crossed into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, are another reminder that Europe is struggling to secure its borders.

The UK cannot afford to ignore the warning.

Reform UK believes in a fair immigration system: welcome those who come legally, stop illegal crossings, secure our borders, and put the interests of British communities first.

Frome & East Somerset deserves representatives who will stand up for safe borders, controlled immigration and common-sense policies.

Sadly, this includes our local Frome Flyer Beefeater.

Following April’s Budget, Whitbread—the owner of Premier Inn and Beefeater—announced plans to exit the branded restaurant business, putting more than 100 restaurants at risk and affecting around 3,000 hardworking employees.

For many communities, this isn’t just about restaurants. It’s about local jobs, opportunities for young people, and another blow to the hospitality industry.

Reform UK argues that lower taxes and reduced costs for businesses would help prevent situations like this and create an environment where hospitality businesses can invest, grow and keep people employed.

Hospitality deserves better.

A Somerset Beefeater pub and restaurant marked for closure is set to take final orders soon amid rising costs.

Our pubs, cafés, restaurants and hotels are the heart of Frome & East Somerset. They create jobs, bring people together and attract visitors to our area—but too many are being pushed to the brink by high taxes and rising costs.

Reform UK wants to give hospitality a fighting chance.

That means:
• Cutting VAT for hospitality from 20% to 10%.
• Scrapping business rates for hospitality businesses.
• Reducing b**r duty to support our local pubs.
• Cutting unnecessary red tape so businesses can get on with what they do best.

These aren’t handouts—they’re about letting businesses keep more of the money they earn.

Imagine what that could mean for our local pubs, independent cafés, restaurants and hotels: more investment, more jobs and thriving high streets across Frome & East Somerset.

Our hospitality industry doesn’t need more obstacles. It needs a government that’s on its side.

Somerset deserves better than the same old parties blaming each other.

The Government issuing Somerset Council with a final warning is a damning indictment of the Liberal Democrat administration. Years of financial mismanagement, spiralling costs, rising council tax and declining services have left taxpayers footing the bill.

But let's not pretend the Conservatives are innocent. They had years to reform local government and tackle waste, yet many of the problems we see today were allowed to grow under their watch. Now they're acting as though they've just discovered the mess.

Reform Wells and Mendip Hills won't accept this cycle of failure.

We believe taxpayers' money should be spent on frontline services, not wasted on bureaucracy, excessive consultancy fees, expensive agency staff or poor financial decisions.

Somerset residents deserve:

• Proper financial discipline with every pound of spending justified.
• An end to waste and unnecessary bureaucracy.
• Better value for taxpayers, with money focused on roads, social care, local services and our communities.
• Greater transparency and accountability so residents know exactly where their money is going.

The Liberal Democrats have failed Somerset.

The Conservatives had their chance and failed to fix the system.

It's time for a real alternative.
