When using bikes/ scooters etc to come to school, we ask that children come off when they get to the school grounds and walk until they can get to the place where they are leaving their bike/ scooter. We have had a couple of close shaves with children nearly crashing into people when they are inside the school grounds.

We have been made aware over the last couple of weeks that a number of children are communicating inappropriate and unkind things to one another using social media on their phones and other devices which has caused upset amongst some pupils.

Whilst we understand the pressure parents may feel in regard to allowing children access to apps and social media, we would urge you to keep an eye on what your child is sending and to whom.

Many apps have age limits on them and we do not have children in the school who are old enough to have tik-tok, WhatsApp, snapchat or Instagram. The age limit is there for a number of reasons and the principal reason is to keep children safe.

We’re not sure what the answer is to this but we would ask that you monitor what your children are sending and who they are sending it to.

It is easy to send something as a ‘joke’ that others do not find funny and it can be complicated enough for children to navigate relationships with their peers face to face never mind through a screen. They have access to a whole world of content and some of the time what they are accessing and how they are using it isn’t appropriate for them.

The Scottish Borders Council Instrumental Music Service is supporting its community partner, Galashiels Town Band. The band are delivering a Come and Try day on
Saturday 3rd October (see attached e-flier for full details). This event is free as is the opportunity to learn a brass instrument at their band hall each Monday from 4pm.

The Gala Town Band’s commitment to education outreach compliments the Scottish Borders Council's commitment to inclusion, equity and wellbeing. Our instrumental music service vision aspires to provide all young people with the opportunity of learning an instrument, while promoting nurturing values, high-quality learning experiences, positive relationships, meaningful community partnerships as well as health and wellbeing.

Music has a powerful ability to build confidence, encourage self-expression, strengthen social connection and foster a sense of achievement. The interactive nature of the Come and Try sessions encourage active participation, respectful communication and joyful engagement, leaving a lasting positive sense of purpose on those who go on to take up an instrument.
