West Yorkshire Police - Wildlife & Rural Crime The policing of wildlife crime is a specialist subject - this page supports the West Yorkshire Police Wildlife Crime Officers.

Wildlife is the native fauna and flora of a region. It includes all non-domesticated animals, wild plants and other organisms. The domestication of wild animals and plant species for human benefit has occurred over many hundreds of years, and can have a major impact on the environment, both positive and negative. Wildlife crime is committed when an offence under certain Acts of Parliament has been breached. Offences often involve cruelty and the unlawful killing of wild mammals and birds, some of which are protected species. There are numerous Acts of Parliament that provide protection for wildlife in England and Wales.

Our thanks to this kind officer from West Yorkshire Police, who brought this young swan through to our base in the back of a Police van yesterday afternoon! The bird was found injured on a road in Wakefield, and is now recovering in our care.

Did you know? It is illegal to buy or carry adult fireworks if you are under 18 yrs.

🎇Adult fireworks are Category 2 and Category 3 fireworks.

💥Category 4 fireworks can only be used by professionals.

Fireworks might seem like fun, but they have an age restriction for a reason. They can cause serious injury, and getting caught with fireworks could lead to a criminal record.

If you have information about a business selling fireworks to children you can report anonymously to West Yorkshire Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133. Alternatively, you can report to Crime Stoppers via 0800 555 111.
