This , we want to say a huge thank you to the team of nearly 200 volunteers who keep Tanfield Railway running.

From restoring historic locomotives and carriages, maintaining our stations and track, welcoming visitors, operating trains, and working behind the scenes, our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do.

The dedication, enthusiasm, and countless hours of hard work help preserve the world’s oldest railway and create memorable experiences for thousands of visitors each year.

We swapped our overalls for the classroom on Saturday as representatives from the Tanfield Railway Board, Trust and Management Team came together to shape our strategy for the next three years.

The session focused on developing four key pillars that will guide our future direction: Heritage & Presentation, Visitor Experience, People, and Sustainability. Establishing these priorities is an important step in ensuring everyone involved with the railway is working towards a shared vision and common goals.

The event was hosted at the Nexus Learning Centre in South Shields, where some of our locomotive crews had the opportunity to swap the footplate for the controls of the new Class 555 Metro Train Simulator!

A big thank you to Nexus for providing such excellent facilities for the day.

Trackside tidiness 😍... Today a number of our volunteers mainly from our Lineside Teams have been onsite tidying the trackbed at Andrews House station! Additionally on Wednesday and Thursday our midweek volunteers replaced the first half of the sleeper wall between Gibraltar Bridge and Marley Hill signalbox. This is often the unseen but equally as important work that goes on behind the scenes. Great work everyone!

📣 New Date… limited spaces available. Steam Driver Experience’s

Step onto the footplate on the world’s oldest railway – and experience life as a real steam driver on Sunday 28th June.

What’s included?

-60 minute session on one of our steam locomotives with an experienced driver who will explain “what’s what” and how to handle the locomotive before you drive for 40 minutes on the railway.
– Complimentary Day Travel, experience Pass holders and one guest can enjoy unlimited train travel for the entire day.
– Tanfield Goody Bag take home a piece of the railway with a special Tanfield goody bag.
– Become part of the footplate crew, don traditional attire for the occasion, with flat cap and boiler suit. PPE provided (gloves, boiler suit). Please wear sturdy shoes.

Visitor information 25th May ℹ️

Following a review of the ground conditions and predicted warmer temperatures we have taken the precautionary measure to operate a diesel hauled service in place of our planned steam locomotive.

This is a rare chance to travel behind Tyne Improvement Commission No35 built in 1958. Those with pre-booked tickets can still enjoy unlimited travel along the railway all day.
