Autumn is on its way at St Mary's so we thought we'd read up on some plant folklore 🌿

The horse chestnut, or conker, tree is not native to the UK but is definitely part of our autumnal traditions. As well as being used for the fun seasonal game, folklore collections tell us that when placed in the home, they scare off spiders and moths.🌰 🕷

The origin behind its name is likely that it's the poor relation of the Spanish chestnut, similar to how a dog rose partly gets its name from being seen as a lower quality flower compared to English garden roses 🌹

Folklorist William Brockie includes in his 1886 book Legends and Superstitions of the County of Durham, that blackberries were also known as bumble-kytes and lady's garter berries.

The 10th of October was, according to William Henderson, 'the fixed limit of blackberrying' because after that, the devil himself goes around the country spitting or clubbing the bramble bushes - best get your blackberrying done soon!

Annabel & Ben chose our 3 day hire package & dressed St Mary's by the Tyne themselves with beautiful greenery from their local garden centre & tables & chairs hired from Birdcages and Dragonflies

It was a beautiful sunny day & the guests were kept cool with ice creams from Luxury Vending • Bespoke event hire with the main wedding breakfast catered by Apna Khana Catering then Two J's Woodfired pizza attended in the evening & our in house bar supplier nickynooquirky provided a drinks package & fully stocked bar throughout the day.

Guests were kept entertained by Steve Keys & flawlessbanduk Keir everyone on the dance floor.

They also had a fantastic Photo Booth from Picture Blast UK

A fabulous weekend for the lovely Claire & Alan & their family & friends. Claire & Alan were one of our first bookings, choosing to celebrate their special with us St Mary's by the Tyne

The wedding party provided most of the decorations themselves & all of their hard work paid off as the St Mary’s looked amazing & the chairs were provide by Crosby Hire
*
𝗟𝗢𝗪 𝗙𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗛𝗜𝗥𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗔𝗡𝗬 & Party Pics Photobooths also provided some of the decor, including the fab Prosecco wall & the Photo Booth.

Claire chose to have a delicious grazing table during the day & the guys at Truly Madly Pizza kept everyone fed in the evening & nickynooquirky our resident bar supplier provided a fully stocked bar.

The guests were entertained by the National Anthems & the fab Toni Marie Oetting & you can see the special guest of honour on@the last image captured perfectly by Joe Connor
