What shall we rename St Mary's?

Spring brings with it a new start, and it is time to rename St Mary's to reflect this beautiful building's new era 🌿

🌟 St Mary's, Oakwellgate refers to the medieval street name for the area around St Mary's, the community that emerged around the building over 700 years ago.

🌟 St Mary's by the Tyne, continues the building's legacy while pinpointing its iconic location.

🌟Gateshead 1275 is a bold change that refers to the year that the building had a rector - this choice encourages you to get creative!

They're colourful, cute, exotic-looking, and you can find them all along the Tyne Derwent Way! Meet the goldfinch.

A group of goldfinches is known as a 'charm', which is appropriate, because they really are charming, lively little birds, with a tinkling call. You can often see them in the trees at St Mary's Heritage Centre where they gather and roam in small flocks.

They visit garden birdfeeders too, where they feed on seeds, particularly sunflower hearts and nyjer.
