After nearly 60 years on the Gateshead waterfront in the shadow of the world-famous Tyne Bridge, the town’s Royal Navy unit at last received its highest honour.

We were delighted to welcome dignitaries, families, friends, members of our respective associations and our colleagues from the Cadet Forces to HMS Calliope last week to celebrate the granting of Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Gateshead.

And many thanks to all who worked hard behind the scenes to make the event a success, including our permanent staff, civilian staff and the team at Gateshead Council. It was genuinely appreciated by everyone!

Well done to team HMS Ceres for representing the Royal Navy at the engagement event earlier this week!

A joint team from HMS Ceres and Yorkshire Universities Royal Naval Unit represented the Royal Navy at an engagement event at Wakefield Trinity earlier this week.

Events like this are a great way of showcasing the work that the Royal Navy does within our community. As the local units the area we always enjoy meeting the public and talking about our work. They’re also a brilliant opportunity for the two units to work together.

During the event, four local companies signed the Armed Forces Covenant and there was also a great brief by the RN presentation team.

As ever, there was also a very warm welcome from local council members. Thanks to everyone who worked hard behind the scenes to make this event happen and to everyone who took the time to engage with us!

We were fortunate to receive an excellent brief by two members of HMS Venturer’s ship’s company earlier this week.

We really value opportunities to learn about the new ships and equipment that our teams are likely to working with in the future. As fully integrated members of the Naval Service, our Reservists are trained to the same standards as our regular counterparts and often work alongside them on exercises and operations at home and overseas.

We’re grateful for the time that our guests took out of their visit schedule to meet us, and we look forward to building our relationship with them!
