Last week our Unit Engagement Officer, Lt Cdr Matt attended a Remembrance Service to commemorate the 44th Anniversary of the Falklands Conflict.

The event took place at the Jigsaw Memorial, Killingworth and was attended by local dignitaries, veterans and serving members of the Armed Forces.

Matt was privileged to hear to a very poignant address by by Mr Shaun Rigby, who served onboard RFA FORT GRANGE.

His ship conducted vital refuelling and resupplying of Task Force ships, using helicopters and special lines to transfer fuel and equipment. He spent many days in considerable danger and under attack in “Bomb Alley”, San Carlos Water supporting the Landing Forces. The importance of robust logistical support to the military is often overlooked, but without it operations will grind to a halt. That’s why the “lived experiences” of veterans like Shaun are so important in ensuring we don’t forget the lessons from the past.

Also present was Mr Jim Houghton, who also went down south as a member of the ship’s company of HMS ILLUSTRIOUS during the campaign. The aircraft carrier was built in Tyneside and rushed into service during the conflict. It is part of the proud ship building heritage and maritime tradition in our region.

Thank you to everyone involved for inviting us and allowing us to participate in the service. Events like these are important to us, because they give us a chance to meet and learn from veterans who have experienced conflict first-hand. As one of the Navy’s fighting arms, the Maritime Reserves trains and prepares our teams to be ready to serve on live operations at home and overseas.

Congratulations to the Full Circle Team… we were deight to host you at HMS CALLIOPE in April.
