The Northern Gunners - Army Reserve

The Northern Gunners - Army Reserve The Regimental headquarters is in Gateshead and we have four sub-units, known as batteries, based in Blyth, Kingston Park, South Shields and Leeds.

"The Northern Gunners" are the Royal Artillery’s Army Reserve unit in the North East of England, and the only Army Reserve unit to hold, maintain and train on the armoured tracked M270, Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). The Army's only Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) Regiment. 101 Regiment, "The Northern Gunners" are the Royal Artillery's Army Reserve unit based in the North East of Engla

nd. The MLRS is the British Army's main 'precision fire' system, able to engage targets at long ranges with extreme precision. Each battery has its own reconnaissance and command sections which control the MLRS movement and firing, as well as the delivery of ammunition. The 3-man MLRS detachment will often be operating and moving independently, as will the other elements of the battery, such as the 2-man ammunition truck crews. This needs a certain quality of individual, as well as good training and good communications. There is no need for previous experience or particular skills or qualifications, just a willingness to learn. The British Army delivers some of the best training in the world, and much of the training you'll receive is recognised by civilian training organisations and employers. You will be taught basic soldiering skills, from map reading and field craft to weapon handling. Basic training, takes place on drill evenings in Army Reserve Centres, at weekends and over 2 week blocks at Army training establishments. When you complete your Basic training you will choose a role. The minimum commitment we ask of our reserve soldiers is 28 days’ training a year. This consists of a two-week exercise, once per year, with the rest of the training taking place on weekends through the year and drill nights on a Tuesday evening. You’ll be paid to attend training and will also be eligible for travel and some other expenses. Many reserve soldiers find they want to do much more than the minimum and there are plenty of opportunities. You will be given high quality training. You will operate equipment and work as a team, you will develop physically and mentally, so you can work alongside the regular army.

🎉Happy Birthday, Centurion🎉

On 23 April, Ronald Clayton, a proud former Gunner of 25th Regiment Royal Artillery, celebrated an incredible milestone his 100th birthday at Eastside Gardens Care Home in Wallsend.

Joined by family, friends, distinguished guests and representatives from 101st (Northumbrian) Regiment Royal Artillery the day was a fitting tribute to a remarkable life of service and resilience.

Seated on his “throne” and dressed as a king, he shared memories from his service and proudly displayed his medals each one a symbol of his contribution.

To mark the occasion, on behalf of the Commanding Officer, Warrant Officer Brett Wilkes and Sergeant Andy Robbins presented Ronald with Royal Artillery cufflinks and a pin badge bearing the words that say it all "Once a Gunner, Always a Gunner."

We thank Ronald for his service and wish him continued happiness on this extraordinary milestone.

Happy 100th Birthday, Ronald 🎂

🏔️❄️ Northern Gunners Army Reserve Ski Foundation Training – French Alps ❄️🏔️

Our week out in the French Alps was nothing short of epic.

From Day 1 tackling red and black runs with over 20 miles skied to mastering ski touring and essential mountain safety skills by Day 2, the team consistently pushed their limits in demanding alpine conditions.

Key moments included:

⛷️ Learning to apply skins and ascend steep terrain.

🛷 Practising emergency stretcher construction and avalanche transceiver use.

🏔️ Digging snow holes and constructing a full snow cave for shelter.

🚨 Intensive avalanche awareness and snowpack assessment training.

🎿 Touring fully off-piste in remote terrain, covering 60 miles over the final days.

🏁 Completing the full Three Valleys circuit twice in one day—with fierce competition for fastest skier!

Despite challenging weather the course blended technical skiing, endurance, and vital mountain safety skills, making it one of the most rewarding and enjoyable weeks on the slopes to date.

A huge well done to all Northern Gunners who took on this challenge with grit, resilience, and true camaraderie. 👏❄️
