Unfortunately, one of our cygnets got into a bit of trouble this morning. It was struggling to move and seemed to be stuck fast in the mud, so we waded out to investigate.

On closer inspection we found the problem — a large tangle of discarded fishing line wrapped around its mouth, legs, and wings.

It wasn’t overly impressed about being carried away from its family, but we brought it back to the visitor centre, carefully removed all the line, and gave it a full health check to make sure nothing else was amiss.

Happily, it’s now back out on the lake with its family, paddling around as if nothing ever happened.

Sadly, we’ve seen far too many of our lake birds injured by discarded fishing gear. Some end up with fishing line tightly wrapped around their legs, while others suffer from hooks caught in their mouths or tangled in their feathers.

Help us to prevent grass fires at our Country Parks.
With this dry weather the grass is very flammable at the moment so it is especially important that we are extra careful.

Please make sure that you dispose of ci******es and other smoking materials responsibly. Make sure they're fully extinguished and cool before placing them in a bin.
Also as a reminder we don't allow BBQs on sites for this reason as well.

If you do spot a fire please call 999 immediate to alert the fire services.

Thank you all for your help with this.

We had a special visitor in the garden today — the Hummingbird Hawk‑moth, a tiny powerhouse that really does behave like its namesake bird. This small, day‑flying moth migrates to the UK each summer from Southern Europe and North Africa, arriving in varying numbers between May and September, especially along southern coastlines.

It’s famous for its 80‑beats‑per‑second wing speed, which blurs its orange underwings into a bright flash as it hovers expertly at flowers. With its long, curled proboscis — like a strand of black liquorice — it drinks from nectar rich flowers such as lavender, red valerian, and other garden favourites, often along woodland edges, heathland, and scrubby margins.

Females lay their eggs on bedstraw, the food plant for their caterpillars, choosing buds and flowers where the young can feed safely.

A fleeting visitor, but always a spectacular one.
