At First Steps Future Training, we work with learners who are looking to build a career in the construction industry.

Through our programmes, learners gain practical construction skills, recognised qualifications, their CSCS card and valuable experience through work placements.

We’re always keen to build relationships with construction companies who can offer work placements and potentially provide opportunities for future employment.

Our recent learner success stories show just how valuable these opportunities can be, with learners progressing from training, to placement, to full time employment.

If your company would be interested in supporting a learner or working with us, we’d love to hear from you!!

Junior joined us through our Training for Work programme, delivered in partnership with All in Glasgow and sponsored by Glasgow City Council.

During his time at our centre, Junior successfully completed his Level 4 Health & Safety qualification and passed his CSCS test, and gained his CSCS card.

Junior showed great commitment and a fantastic attitude throughout the programme. He then completed a 6 week work placement with AJM Contractors, gaining valuable hands on experience and developing his skills on site.

His hard work and determination certainly paid off, as AJM Contractors were so impressed with Junior that they offered him a position as a Bricklayer’s Labourer! 👏

Congratulations, Junior! We wish you all the best as you take the next step in your construction career. 🧱👷

FIRST STEPS TO EMPLOYMENT – WHAT IS IT? 🏗️

Our First Steps to Employment programme is a fully funded 12 week programme, funded by First Steps Future Training, designed to help learners take the next step towards a career in construction.

So, how does it work?

Our programme is different from Training for Work. Training for Work is open to eligible applicants aged 16+ with no previous experience required and requires a Glasgow postcode, as it is funded by Glasgow City Council.

First Steps to Employment is our own progression programme. We support learners who have attended our Construction Taster Programme. All we ask for is three things: good attendance, a good attitude and a will to work.

After completing the Construction Taster Programme and developing their practical skills across our training centre, learners could progress onto First Steps to Employment.

Throughout the 12 week programme, learners:

📚 Complete their Level 4 Health & Safety qualification and undertake CSCS training and testing, with support from our instructors every step of the way. At the end, learners will achieve their lifetime SQA Level 4 Health & Safety in a Construction Environment Award and CSCS card.

👷 Choose their preferred career path – we work with each learner to find out what area of construction they would like to pursue and narrow this down to three preferred trades.

🤝 Gain real industry experience through a 6 week work placement. Our fantastic Placement Officer, Leone, works directly with employers to find a suitable placement for each learner, giving them the opportunity to gain hands on experience, prove themselves and show an employer what they can do.

🚀 Progress towards employment or an apprenticeship – the aim is for learners to impress their employer during their placement and progress into a full time job or apprenticeship.

💷 Receive a training allowance throughout the 12 week programme.

Our Construction Taster Programme helps learners build their practical skills, while First Steps to Employment takes learners to the next stage – gaining qualifications, completing a work placement and working towards employment.

We support our learners every step of the way, from their first practical skills through to gaining qualifications and getting valuable experience with an employer.

Are you still at school and thinking about a career in construction?

Our Construction Taster Programme is a great way to get hands on experience, learn practical skills and discover which trade could be right for you.

No previous experience is needed. Our fully qualified, industry experienced instructors will teach you the basics and help you build your skills towards an apprenticeship level standard.

As part of the programme, young people move around our training centre and get practical experience across a range of trades, including:

🔨 Painting & Decorating
🧱 Brickwork
🚧 Groundworks
🪚 Joinery
🏗️ Aluminium Mobile Towers

The programme gives you the opportunity to try different trades, develop practical skills and gain a better understanding of what each career involves helping you make an informed decision about which trade you would like to progress into.

We understand that not everyone learns best in a classroom or through academic subjects. That’s why we believe in giving young people the opportunity to learn by doing, build confidence and develop practical skills while they are still at school.

Our aim is to help young people leave school with a clearer idea of their future and the skills, knowledge and experience to progress into an apprenticeship, college or a career within the construction industry.

Interested in getting started? Speak to your Guidance Teacher at school, who can refer you to us and help you take the first step towards a career in construction.

If you're still at school and interested in finding out where a career in construction could take you, our Construction Taster Programme could be the perfect place to start.

Darren joined us through our Training for Work programme, delivered in partnership with All in Glasgow and funded by Glasgow City Council.

After successfully completing his Health & Safety training, Darren moved on to the practical stage of the programme. Unsure which career path he wanted to take, we supported him by arranging a 6 week work experience placement with Rearo.

The first couple of weeks were challenging, but Darren didn’t give up. He worked hard, grew in confidence and completely turned things around. By the end of his placement, he had impressed everyone with his attitude, progress and commitment.

Darren thoroughly enjoyed his placement and we’re delighted to share that his hard work has paid off. He has now been offered a full time position with Rearo in Govan!

This is exactly what our Training for Work programme is all about: giving young people the skills, support, experience and opportunities they need to move forward.

A massive well done Darren! we’re incredibly proud of you and wish you every success in your new role!👏
