The Tenement House NTS

The Tenement House NTS Step back in time & explore the home of Agnes Toward. Protected by the National Trust for Scotland Her mother also used the house as her business premises.

The house at 145 Buccleuch Street was built in 1892 by speculative builders keen to monopolise on Glasgow’s swift industrial boom. Agnes Toward and her mother, Mrs Agnes Reid Toward who was a dressmaker, moved here in 1911. Miss Toward grew up to become a shorthand typist for a firm of shipping merchants and coal exporters called Prentice, Service & Henderson. She never married and worked on into

her 70s –today she would be seen as an independent career woman. From her extensive archive, we see that she enjoyed taking holidays in Largs, baking, going to church and taking regular theatre trips to watch musicals. You can still see her sign in the stair, with its proud boast of ‘no fitting required’. Mrs Toward passed away in 1939, and her daughter remained living there until 1965 when her failing health required her to move to long-term hospital care. When Agnes died ten years later she left a set of chairs in her will to a church elder, Mr Sam Davidson. When he visited the house to collect them he brought with him his niece Anna, who was instantly struck by the need to preserve the house and its contents, and persuaded the owners to sell it to her. She lived there for seven years before selling it to the Trust in 1982. The Tenement House today, gives visitors from all over the world an opportunity to travel back in time and learn all about Glasgow's past and tenement life, with a specific focus on women's history. As well as the Towards time capsule to visit, we have a lovely shop that stocks Scottish makers products, exhibitions spaces and an archive. We are a National Trust for Scotland property, looked after thanks to the generosity of our members and donors.

🐈 On this International Cat Day, we invite you to make the acquaintance of Tib 🐈

Tib the cat features in one of Miss Toward's childhood letters, he's even honoured with a portrait! She also writes in her mother's scrapbook that Tib was black and white.

He has become a fan favourite amongst our visitors, with many leaving notes and pictures for the Tenement House cat!

We recently had a swatch (a Scottish term meaning to 'inspect') at our visitor comments wall 👀

The comments ranged from "that's exactly how ma granny's living room looked" to our visitors being strangely fascinated by an bed in a cupboard (a valid fascination if we're honest, it's one of our favourite quirks of our wee house)

Turns out a century-old tenement can still get people talking. Who knew? 😆 Here's a selection of our favourites that made us smile

Enjoyed your time at the Tenement House? Be sure to leave us a review via our NTS survey, Trip Advisor or Google. And there's always space for more on our post-it wall!

✨International Day of Friendship✨

Introducing Muriel Fox. Muriel was a classmate of Agnes Toward at Garnethill Public School. This letter was sent to Agnes whilst on holiday.

Muriel would go on to lead quite the fabulous life. Training as a milliner in Paris, she would ultimately go on to open her own dress shop - Murielle's - in Glasgow in 1910! 🎩👗

✨🦄Spotted at the Tenement House: Finnie!🦄✨

There was so much to see and do - from learning about Miss Toward's house, trying out our typewriter, and grabbing some classic Scottish snacks in the Wally Dug Café!

Sadly our teacakes are the standard size 😞
We'd rather the giant one too!

In the city for the Games this week? Pop by Buccleuch Street and learn more about Glasgow's social history at this preserved historic home (and maybe pick up a teacake too!)

Nothing will stop a Glaswegian's night out.
Not even an air raid.

Housing numerous heavy industries, including its world-famous shipyards, Glasgow was a high target for air raids during WW2.

On this day 84 years ago, this was a reality for Glaswegians going about their daily lives.

But that wouldn't stop the entertainment scene

The show would literally go on, however, as theatres, dance halls and cinemas would continue operating - if with a few new safety features - as seen in this programme insert from the Alhambra Theatre

We like to think of this as a testament to the determined nature of the city's people - even in times of adversity

Do you know that, in addition to the collection within the house, we house numerous objects and papers collected by Agnes Toward throughout her life? Make sure to ask about our archive on your next visit!
