Kirkintilloch Health and Care Centre

Following disruption to water supply in Kirkintilloch yesterday, Kirkintilloch Health and Care Centre is not open to the public this morning (Thursday 3 September). Members of the public will be contacted by services if they were due to attend for appointments and these will be rearranged. Please do not present at the Kirkintilloch Health and Care Centre this morning, staff have been diverted to work from other sites. We will keep you updated as to when the centre will reopen.

In addition, Woodhead Medical Practice is not open today due to the water situation and Doctors are working remotely. Patients can phone 07376 561469 whilst the centre remains closed.

💙 A landmark moment for newborn screening in Scotland.

The first baby identified with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) through Scotland's newborn screening programme has started treatment following an early diagnosis.

Tested at just five days old, the baby was referred quickly to specialist services, allowing treatment to begin before symptoms developed.

The family have chosen to remain anonymous but kindly agreed for their story to be shared to help raise awareness of the benefits of newborn screening.

A treatment that uses the body's own immune system to fight disease is changing lives.

In this video, Dr David Irvine, Consultant Haematologist and Cell Therapy Specialist at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, explains CAR-T cell therapy and why it's one of the most exciting advances in modern medicine.

Adam Nicolson became the first person in Scotland to receive CAR-T cell therapy for myeloma blood cancer, while he was a patient at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. After being told he may only have a few months to live, CAR-T therapy gave him a second chance at life. Today, he is in remission and enjoying precious time with his family and friends again.

Jane has bravely shared her story about how bowel cancer impacted her. Jane hadn’t taken the test when she had received it through the post. Now, she encourages others to do so.

🎶 Doctors from Glasgow's biggest hospitals are swapping scrubs for sheet music to support a great cause.

Clinicians from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde will perform with the EDO - European Doctors Orchestra at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Sunday 27 September, raising money for Children's Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS).

The orchestra brings together doctors from across Europe who share a passion for music and medicine, and all proceeds will help CHAS provide vital support to children with life-shortening conditions and their families.

🔬 Research Spotlight: Joe Symonds

Meet Dr Joe Symonds, Paediatric Neurology Consultant at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Joe is a Principal Investigator and Sub-Investigator on a number of trials for children and young people with epilepsy, and he leads research focused on genetic epilepsies of early childhood.

He was motivated to work in research because he wanted to play a part in improving the outlook for children and young people living with neurological disorders. With advances in treatment options already making a real difference to patients and families, he is excited about the potential for research to transform care even further in the years ahead.

One of Joe's proudest achievements in research was receiving the Ronnie MacKeith Prize from the British Paediatric Neurology Association in recognition of his outstanding contribution to paediatric neurology research. The award reflects his commitment to advancing understanding of neurological conditions and improving outcomes for children and young people.

Reflecting on his work, he said: “What motivates me most is the opportunity to help improve the outlook for children and young people with neurological disorders. Research is advancing at an incredible pace, and it’s exciting to be involved in developing and evaluating new treatments that have the potential to make a real difference to patients and their families. Being part of discoveries that can improve lives now and in the future is immensely rewarding.”

This is a two-dose vaccine, with the second dose given at least 28 days after the first. Maximum protection is achieved around two weeks after the second dose.

You do not need an appointment - anyone who meets the eligibility criteria can simply turn up and be vaccinated at any of these clinics.

The vaccine is being offered to:

✔️ Young people born between 1 March 2008 and 28 February 2009, and any others who were in S6 during the 2025-26 academic year, regardless of future education plans
✔️ Undergraduate university entrants under the age of 25 who are starting university for the first time in the academic year 2026-27, including international students
✔️ College entrants under 25 starting college for the first time in the academic year 2026-27 while living away from home in shared student accommodation, including international students
