Jackie's Friday Film Review
NOPE

Described as 'understatedly intense' and 'a slice of spectacular cinema' by enthusiastic critics, this 2022 film sees Daniel Kaluuya shine brightly once again, this time as horse trainer Otis Hayward Jr. On his family ranch in California, he and his sister Emerald (Keke Palmer) find themselves drawn to the skies and what feels like an ominous game of trying to avoid whatever it is up there that seems to be coming their way. The whole tone of the film is of some kind of inevitability.

All the lead actors, which include a scene-stealing Brandon Perea as surveillance-techie Angel and Steven Yeun as neighbouring theme park owner Jupe, are incredibly well cast and carry this curiously mesmerising movie to the..........no spoliers please!

Not long now until the summer reading challenge starts

Ready to Read to the Beat?

Next weekend, children across England and Wales can head to their local library to sign up for the 2026 and start their summer reading adventure.

This year’s Challenge, , celebrates the connection between music and storytelling, encouraging children to discover stories, creativity and rhythm through books.

Taking part is completely free and children can read anything they enjoy, from adventures and comics to fact books and audiobooks.

Visit your local library next weekend and join the challenge! (children can get started in Scotland and online now).

Two little ones enjoying the fun at one of our regular Rhymetime sessions.
Rhymetime takes place at the library very Wednesday at 10.00am. Songs and rhymes for children under 5.
If you can't make it on a Wednesday we have storytime on Fridays at 10.00am followed by a play session.

Jackie’s Friday Film Review
REBUILDING

In this ‘sweet, sad country song of a movie’, Josh O’Connor plays Colorado rancher Dusty, who has lost his inter-generational ranch property to wildfire. Following this devastating event, he is forced to relocate to a spartan trailer in a government-funded emergency camp. He takes a new job working on the highway, and when he collects his 10 year old daughter Callie-Rose (Lily La Torre) from his ex-wife Ruby (Meghann Fahy), they visit the local library to access the wifi so Callie-Rose can do her homework on her tablet.

Dusty is intent on putting his life back together and has a chance of a job working for his cousin in faraway Montana. But as he starts to rekindle his relationships with Ruby and his ailing but sympathetic former mother-in-law Bess (Amy Madigan), as well as finding a sense of community with his fellow trailer-dwellers, Dusty must weigh up some significant life choices before him.

Once again. O’Connor demonstrates how good an actor he is in a role that calls for reticence, strength and quiet vulnerability.

This is a new release film.

SUMMER

In this evocative 2008 East Midlands drama, Robert Carlyle gives a masterclass performance as Shaun, a well-intentioned man worn down by the responsibility of caring for his paralysed friend Daz (Steve Evets). Shifting between time periods, we see how Daz's undiagnosed dyslexia impacted on Shaun, the summer that changed everything and put Daz in a wheelchair, and the current day as Daz is given just weeks to live.

It is a beautifully crafted film offering strong, sensitive performances from the leads and the excellent supporting cast.

Jackie's Friday Film Review
THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING

This 2022 film has been described as 'an intensely personal passion project' for director George Miller. It is certainly an experience and a stunning visual feast which plays out like an Arabian Nights fantasy. It is based on the 1994 novella 'The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye' by AS Byatt.

Tilda Swinton plays academic narratologist Alithia who travels the world attending ancient literary conferences. Whilst in Istanbul she buys a beautiful glass object which, when she gets it back to her hotel room, releases a Djinn, played by Idris Elba, who has been imprisoned in it foe 3000 years. He wants to grant her three wishes but, unusually, she wishes for nothing. And so, within the confines of the room, they talk, and we are treated to amazing, colourful flashbacks of their lives.

The film has a childlike quality to it, but it is visually stunning and the two leads are superb.
