Anyone repeatedly engaging with us using content or language which falls into the above categories will be blocked and/or reported to the associated social media platform. We must always remain politically neutral on social media which is why council officers are unable to reply to, endorse or engage with, any content that is of a party political nature. Political issues can be discussed with local councillors.

Ragwort Warning for Horse Owners

Ragwort is currently in flower across Fife, making it easier to identify and remove from fields and grazing land. While growing, ragwort has a bitter taste that many horses may avoid, once it has been cut, wilted, or incorporated into hay, it loses its bitterness but remains highly toxic. The toxins can cause serious and irreversible liver damage, with the effects building up over time and often not becoming apparent until significant harm has already occurred. Horse owners and land managers are encouraged to check their land regularly and remove ragwort before it sets seed. Early action and prevention are the best ways to reduce the risk to horses and protect animal welfare. If you wish to report ragwort in fields containing horses, please contact Environmental Health.

Blue-green algae are minute organisms that occur naturally in lochs, ponds, reservoirs, rivers and in the sea. They tend to clump together to form large masses or scums. Blue-green algae commonly occurs in hot weather, in waters polluted by agricultural, domestic or industrial discharges.

Officers from within Fife Council Protective Services Team are shortly to begin a process to assist any farmers within Fife who have any problems with the processes involved in recording livestock movements and record keeping. Rob Bowditch Service Manager for Public and Environmental Protection observed that from conversations with stock keepers, and in light of recent events, some people may experience difficulty with online record keeping and in the requirements around tagging. There are also one or two incidents where animals have been transferred to other locations, often outwith Fife, where confusion around issues with documentation has emerged. Fife Council has two Animal Health Officers Robyn Gray and Ian Laing who are available to visit farmers who, for whatever reason, may be experiencing difficulty with record keeping involving one animal or a whole herd to offer advice which would hopefully make farm owners more comfortable with the processes and ensure they are registered with all of the agencies they should be. Should any farmers, their family or neighbours feel that someone is having difficulty we can arrange a visit and assist in avoiding any confusion or apprehension which exists.
