We know people want roads that are in good condition, and that’s what we’re working towards. 🚧

Gloucestershire’s new highways chief, Cllr Mark Harris, is setting out the challenge behind maintaining our roads.

The county needs around £52m each year to keep roads in the condition people expect, but current government funding is around £36.5m. That leaves a £15.5m annual gap, which makes it harder to keep up with demand across the network.

Even so, highways teams are out across the county every day, prioritising the most urgent repairs and keeping roads safe. We’re also putting in an extra £15m over the next three years to carry out more maintenance and improve conditions where we can. ✅

⚠️ 🚧 National Highways works on the A417 missing link and Air Balloon roundabout are expected to cause significant delays from 29 June. Plus overnight closures 25-28 June. See below for details and follow the link to the National Highways website for further information👇

🚧 A417 Update – Temporary route from 29 June 🚧

From 6am on Monday 29 June, traffic on the A417 between Gloucester and Cirencester will be switched onto a new temporary route from the A46 Brockworth interchange to the former Cowley roundabout. This arrangement is expected to be in place for at least five weeks while we continue building the new road.

🔧 What to expect:

- Narrower lanes and a 40mph speed limit
- Single-lane traffic in both directions between A46 Brockworth Junction and Air Balloon
- Permanent closure of the existing A417 between Air Balloon and the B4070

This change allows us to keep traffic moving, protect our workforce, and continue construction safely.

⏱️ Plan ahead:
We expect significant delays, so please allow extra time for your journey. If you’re travelling longer distances, consider alternative routes, especially during peak times.

🛑 Upcoming closures:

Thursday 25 June (9pm–6am): Overnight closure between A46 Brockworth and Air Balloon
Friday 26 June (9pm) to Monday 29 June (6am): Full weekend closure between A429 Burford Road and Air Balloon

🚧 Out near Nympsfield this morning, Cllr Mark Harris joined Gloucestershire Highways and Ringway crews from the Stroudwater depot to see pothole repairs in action — and even helped fill one in himself.

We know potholes and road damage can be frustrating, especially on busy local routes. Highways crews are working across the county carrying out repairs and helping keep Gloucestershire moving safely.

🚧 Traffic & Pedestrian Update Black Dog Way/London Road – From 10 June 🚧
🚶‍♂️From tomorrow (10 June), pedestrians will be directed around works at the London Way / Black Dog Way junction via the footway by St Peter’s Church. Please follow the signed diversion route to safely navigate the area.
🚗 Motorists: A temporary one-way system will also be in place on London Road from 10 June. Please follow signage and allow extra time for your journey.
