Today is Ukraine Independence Day. We're celebrating the Ukrainian families who have made Gloucestershire their home, and thanking the hundreds of local residents who have supported them through our Homes for Ukraine scheme.💙💛

Since 2022, more than 2,000 Ukrainians have been welcomed to Gloucestershire. Many have now settled into local communities, found work, started school, made friends and built new lives across the county. Could you help someone do the same?

Residents who host through the Homes for Ukraine scheme currently receive a £600 monthly thank you payment and ongoing support from our Homes for Ukraine team.

A policing operation will be taking place in Gloucester tomorrow (Saturday 22 August) due to a planned protest.

There will be an increased police presence in the Barnwood area in the morning to enable lawful, peaceful protest and to help keep everyone safe.

Officers are being deployed to enable the participants' right to free speech and to ensure the safety of all in attendance as well as the public.

They hope to minimise disruption to other members of the public, however they advise that journey times for motorists travelling in the area, including around Corinium Avenue and Saw Mills End, may take longer than usual and so to plan ahead.

Assistant Chief Constable Arman Mathieson said: "We have been engaging with representatives from both protest groups, and we have appropriate plans in place to ensure it runs without incident and in a safe and lawful manner.

“We hope there will be minimal impact to traffic in and around Barnwood and that people who live, work and visit the area can carry on with as little disruption as possible.

"The role of the police at these events is to keep everyone safe and to carefully balance everyone's individual rights, without fear or favour.

“We fully respect that people are free to share their views and opinions, and we will always do our utmost to enable lawful protest, but we will not hesitate to take appropriate action when there is any unlawful behaviour intended to disrupt the event and put people’s safety at risk.

"We are increasing our police presence in Barnwood tomorrow to reassure the community and I would ask anyone with concerns to speak to attending officers."
