We're wrapping up our volunteer profiles this evening with Anneke, who helps at Oakley Interactive Space.

Once again, we say thank you to all of our amazing volunteers this ! Without your vital help, we wouldn't be able to offer everything that we do.

My college helped me arrange a place volunteering with the library service. Originally, I was at Cheltenham Library but I now mostly help at Oakley Interactive Space.

To continue our celebration of , we're once again featuring the profile of one of our amazing, dedicated volunteers.

This time we spoke with Heather who helps at Prestbury Library.

My first Saturday job as a teenager was working at Cheltenham Public Library in the Junior Library. I chose this because I wanted to train as a Junior School teacher when I left school. Now, later in life and retired I wanted a volunteering job that was worthwhile and something I would enjoy too, therefore I have gone full circle back to where I started all those years ago! Libraries have definitely improved for the better though since then!

I love being helpful to the staff and the public. It also means that by volunteering at the library it is able to keep running and not close, (as was the situation some years ago). Prestbury is a lovely village and the community value the library for a variety of reasons and I wanted to support 'keeping it open'. It is also good to have a purpose and a positive reason to go out to somewhere where you feel needed.

In general I feel proud when I say" I am only a volunteer" and then contradicted by staff or the public who say "You're not just a volunteer because your help is invaluable to us and without you we couldn't get through all the work we have to do to help the public find books, reserve books, shelve books etc". This makes me feel my efforts are worthwhile, therefore it is a very rewarding.

I love interacting with the public and keeping in contact with village life and the people who visit, many of whom I have known for a long time in the village. It is lovely to encourage children to read and relax in the children's section of the library from tiny toddlers to teenagers. It is also rewarding to help out with the children's craft activities sometimes, without the responsibility of being 'the teacher'! I am still keen to learn new things and the library is often the place for this. I enjoy choosing books for my grandchildren and reading to them in Australia over 'Facetime'. Having this link makes a difference to my relationship with them over the long distance. I also like to read books myself that are recommended to me by people and staff or books I come across by chance whilst shelving and tidying.

If you love reading, research, meeting people and helping them in a variety of ways then maybe 'volunteering in the library is something you might consider. As I organise the volunteer rota for 8 of us at Prestbury I know that volunteering only requires a couple of sessions a month only when you are available.

To mark , we're featuring profiles of just a few of our amazing, county-wide team of dedicated volunteers.

We had a chat with John from Churchdown Library to ask about his experience volunteering with Gloucestershire Libraries:

I just wanted to do my bit in keeping the service available as part of the civilised way of life which we generally enjoy locally - the service was under threat from financial cuts.

Offering to donate some of my garden seedlings to grow into shrubs to unobtrusively prevent people from parking half on the grass near the car park entrance. Such parking made the grass look scruffy and muddy, and was somewhat hazardous for other drivers entering the car park.

In retirement I feel glad to be able to help the community.

Join us at Chipping Campden Library for a special event with Jay Jolliffe, the author of Smiling Through Tears. ๐Ÿ“š

Smiling Through Tears is a tale of two friends who are facing difficult situations. Reverend Alasdair Sommersby is losing his fight with cancer. Frances Campbell lives with the threat of violence.

This character-driven novel presents a rich tapestry of place, poetry, cuisine and culture.

Jayโ€™s writing began in 1999 when a close friend, knowing he was dying of cancer, gave her a large battered envelope containing personal papers. These papers were the inspiration behind the first story The Death of a Clerk in Holy Orders.

Learn more about her writing at this event!

๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ Pride Month starts today, so we're sharing some LGBTQIA+ novels available at the library.

๐Ÿ“šOrdinary Saints - Niamh Nรญ Mhaoileoin
Can you imagine it? I'd say to them. Can you imagine me there in the front row in Saint Peter's Square? The le***an sister of a literal saint.

๐Ÿ“šMothers and Sons - Adam Haslett
At forty, Peter, an asylum lawyer in New York City, is overworked and isolated. But when the asylum case of a young gay man pierces Peter's numbness, the event that he has avoided for twenty years returns to haunt him.

๐Ÿ“šThe Two Roberts - Damian Barr
Scotland, 1933. Bobby MacBryde is on his way. After years grafting at Lees Boot Factory, heโ€™s off to the Glasgow School of Art, to his future. On his first day he will meet another Robert, a quiet man with loose dark curls โ€“ and never leave his side.

๐Ÿ“šOpen Heaven - Seaฬn Hewitt
On the cusp of adulthood, James dreams of another life far away from his small village. Beholden to the expectations of home and family, his burgeoning desire threatens to unravel his shy exterior. Then he meets Luke.

๐Ÿ“šTwenty Years Together - Tom Rob Smith
Danny and Luis have been a couple for decades. Piece by piece, they've built a life together. The only thing they didn't have was a marriage. But the law finally changes, and Danny decides to propose - on a Scottish hilltop, to the love of his life.

๐Ÿ“šThe Three Lives of Cate Kay - Kate Fagan
Who is Cate Kay? Cate Kay is the most famous author on the planet. But it's just a name. Somehow, despite her bestselling novels and the record-breaking film franchise, the writer has remained completely anonymous.

๐Ÿ“šMinor Black Figures - Brandon Taylor
Wyeth is a newcomer to New York, a young Black painter who is trying to find his place in the contemporary Manhattan art scene. Then he meets Keating, a white former priest struggling with his faith.

๐Ÿ“šSunstruck - William Rayfet Hunter
It's summer and a young man walks through the gates of a luxurious mansion in the south of France. At the dinner table, the Blakes are waiting for him: Annie, the family matriarch and world-famous singer, her inscrutable husband David and their children, Dot, aloof and rebellious, Lily, the man's carefree university friend, and their enigmatic older brother Felix.
