As we continue celebrating Get Online Week, we’re shining the spotlight on Chris at Tetbury & Nailsworth Libraries, one of our wonderful Computer Buddy volunteers.
We caught up with Chris to hear about their experience volunteering and why he enjoys helping others with their digital skills.
What inspired you to start volunteering with the library service?
I spent most of my working life teaching, followed by a decade as an IT system trainer. I’m therefore used to supporting a variety of users with different user needs, experience, and levels of enthusiasm. From seeing an advert for a Computer Buddy in the local newspaper, I began volunteering at Tetbury and Nailsworth libraries. From this I learned about and joined the Gloucestershire Digital Champions Network, and now also provide support with Digihubs, including at the Churn’s Friendship Café; at a local care home, and providing home visits through “Digi at Home”.
Can you share a moment that made you feel proud to be a library volunteer?
It’s very satisfying to finding solutions for people, whether it’s learning how to use a smart phone, switching to Windows 11, or using the NHS app. I feel very proud when someone gets answers or understand how to do what they need. I go home buzzing and a spring in my step.
What would you say to someone scrolling past this who’s thinking about volunteering?
If anyone sees a request for a Computer Buddy, have some IT skills and like people, I would tell them not to scroll passed, but go and have a talk to your library.
