Gloucester Conservatives welcome today’s announcement that Gloucestershire will move forward as One Gloucestershire.

This is the solution we supported and campaigned for because we believe it is the best option for residents.

All the proposals put forward to Government had good points and challenges, but we felt One Gloucestershire offered the strongest overall deal for our county. It means clearer accountability, less duplication, better joined up services and a better chance of more taxpayers’ money being spent where it matters most.

For residents, this should mean simpler local government, better services and a clearer answer to the question: who is responsible when something needs fixing?

We also hope this next stage of local government reorganisation and devolution is backed by the funding Gloucestershire needs from central Government. Changing structures alone is not enough. Residents need to see real improvements in the services they rely on every day.

Gloucestershire is a fantastic county and we want every community to benefit from this change. We look forward to working positively with others across the county to make sure One Gloucestershire delivers better services, stronger communities and good value for taxpayers.

On the prosecution of former soldiers Kemi says:-

“Next week, it will get worse. The Government is forcing a vote on the Northern Ireland Troubles Bill, another piece of legislation aimed at prosecuting our soldiers. It has Starmer and Hermer’s fingerprints all over it.

Of course, British soldiers should fight within the law. But hounding our veterans through the courts will have a chilling effect on our ability to recruit people to the Army.
It is a brain-dead strategy at a time when the priority should be growing our Armed Forces.

Former Labour defence secretaries are pleading with the Prime Minister to increase defence spending. The long-awaited Defence Investment Plan is nine months late. But the Government seems to have no trouble finding time to harass our soldiers.

These are serious times Britain is living through. War in Europe and in the Middle East.

It’s not just Labour. The Greens want to leave Nato and scrap our nuclear deterrent. The Liberal Democrats seriously think that more borrowing is an option while bond markets are wobbling. Reform hasn’t even bothered to appoint a defence or foreign affairs spokesman. The Conservatives’ shadow attorney general, Lord Wolfson, is representing veterans in the Supreme Court for free. That is the difference.

Only the Conservatives are holding Labour to account, and only the Conservatives, under my leadership, can keep Britain safe in a dangerous world.”
