Gloucestershire Airport's joint shareholders, Gloucester City Council and Cheltenham Borough Council, are pleased to confirm that a preferred bidder has been selected for the purchase of the airport.

The company has committed to maintaining Gloucestershire Airport as a thriving centre for aviation and supporting the many businesses based across the 350-acre site.

Councillor Rowena Hay, Leader of Cheltenham Borough Council, said: “This is excellent news for Gloucestershire and an important step towards securing the airport’s long-term future. The selection of a preferred bidder committed to maintaining an operational airport provides a strong basis for protecting this important regional asset.”

Andy Hearne, Director of Place, Assets and Regeneration at Gloucester City Council, said: “The airport is home to many businesses and plays an important role in the area’s economy. We are pleased to have reached this significant stage in the process and to see a commitment to supporting the businesses based at the site and its continued operation as an airport.”

The process will now move into a period of due diligence. During this stage, all parties are subject to legal and commercial confidentiality requirements, which means that no further details about the preferred bidder or the proposed transaction can be released at this time.

Big news for food lovers! There’s a tasty new addition to the line-up at Gloucester Food Dock.

A major boost for one of Gloucester's most historic buildings. We're delighted to have been offered a £261,500 grant to help conserve The Fleece Hotel, an important part of the city's history.

It's part of the Heritage at Risk Capital Fund being delivered by Historic England to support the repair and preservation of historic buildings. Alongside The Fleece, £380,000 has also been awarded to the Pin Factory Annexe at The Folk of Gloucester, cared for by Gloucester Civic Trust.

While The Fleece remains a large and complex site that will require further funding to bring fully back into use, this grant marks an important step forward. It will enable essential surveys, repairs to the Westgate range roof, and help refurbish the vacant shop unit on Westgate Street so it can once again be brought back into use.

The grant will also help us share the building's story with the community through more public open days and a new exhibition exploring The Fleece's rich history and plans for its future.

Every step brings us closer to securing a new future for this much-loved Gloucester landmark.

UPDATE: Political group leaders at Gloucester City Council were invited to meet Managing Director Jon McGinty this afternoon as part of a regular check-in and consultation on upcoming council business and important decisions.

The meeting provided an opportunity to ensure group leaders are aware of decisions that may need to be taken while there is no Leader and Cabinet, and to discuss how the council can maximise transparency and democratic oversight.

Meanwhile, the council continues to operate as normal, with support for residents and businesses continuing as usual. Officers remain fully focused on their work, progressing major projects, strengthening the council’s financial position and delivering the council’s agreed priorities.

Preparatory work will also continue on matters requiring decisions in the future, including the council’s budget. Where decisions are needed, these will continue to be dealt with in accordance with the council’s constitution and established decision-making arrangements.

The temporary absence of a Leader and Cabinet does not prevent the council from continuing its day-to-day work. The Managing Director also has delegated authority to take urgent executive decisions where necessary.

Things are moving forward at Greyfriars!

Behind the scenes, we've been busy meeting with traders, local businesses and key stakeholders as we shape the future Market, Food Court and Performance Venue. These conversations are helping us create a destination that celebrates Gloucester's independent spirit, supports local businesses and gives people more reasons to visit the city centre.

We're excited about what's to come and look forward to sharing more updates as the vision for Greyfriars continues to take shape.

We have been extremely pleased with the strong level of interest in Gloucestershire Airport, with a significant number of companies coming forward to bid to purchase it.

A robust assessment process has been managed by the property company Savills and we expect to confirm a preferred bidder imminently. For commercial reasons, the identities of all parties will remain confidential.

The airport is currently jointly owned by Gloucester City Council and Cheltenham Borough Council. Both local authorities have committed to keep the site as an operational airport and a base for aviation related businesses.
