Another important step has been taken towards the creation of new authorities in Surrey.

Parliament has now approved the Surrey Structural Changes Order. This sets the legal framework for moving to the two new unitary councils in April 2027. The Order confirms:

• The names of the new councils – East Surrey Council and West Surrey Council
• The move to a single tier of local government from 1 April 2027
• How the transition will be managed, including statutory Joint Committees, an Implementation Team and shadow authorities
• Key electoral and governance arrangements for the new councils

The Order also confirms that elections to East Surrey Council and West Surrey Council will take place on Thursday 7 May 2026, when residents will elect the councillors who will lead the transition and then represent them once the new councils come into effect.

More information on the order can be found here: https://ow.ly/8yx050YsLW1.

The Order and the Explanatory Memorandum will also be available online shortly at https://ow.ly/mXYW50YsLVX.
