Today's highlights include preening spoonbills, swooping marsh harriers and a great white egret with a fascination for a stick. Bearded t**s, barn owl, bittern, tree sparrows, sedge warbler, reed bunting, cetti's warbler (seen) also recorded to name but a few.

Is there such a thing as bittern over share? This one flew in from across the River Ouse to feed. Not all the bitterns seen are resident on site. Lots of places around the Humber Estuary provides perfect habitat for them. Great white egret, marsh harriers, hobby and barn owls also seen today.

Now you see her now you don't, one of our female Bitterns using her wings to help slow and steady her slide down the reed onto the floor.

Good to see a big brood of 13 Gadwall just out of the nest this morning, hopefully they will be OK despite the cold and rain. Gadwall female look like Mallard females but their breeding biology is very different, hatching over a month and a half later and feeding out in the open on the deeper ponds. This seems to give them an advantage with lower predation rates and and higher chick survival that is resulting in the Gadwall population overtaking Mallard as our most common duck on the reserve.

Not the best picture but amazing to see our first Marsh Harrier chick starting to fly yesterday! Almost three to four weeks earlier than they usually start to fledge, probably helped by the warm early spring and no big high tide in April.

Bitterns have been particularly active recently with this female on Singleton lagoon yesterday. Also up to four Great Egrets and two spoonbills, one being a Dutch ringed bird that had been seen at Tophill Low the day before.

With hungry mouths to feed the barn owls have been out hunting during the day giving some fantastic views. Thanks to regular Pippa for these great shots. There is at least one chick in the barn owl box, possibly two. The stock doves didn't seem to give a hoot! - OK I admit that was a bit cheesy!
