After celebrating their second anniversary in August, our Skin Cancer Nurse-Led Support Group continues with its next meeting on Friday afternoon, 4 September.

Led by our Dermatology Support Nurses Helen and Leanne, the group is for anyone who has been diagnosed with this type of cancer, whether the diagnosis has been recent or you just feel like you would like some support after a diagnosis some time ago.

The support group meetings are held on the first Friday of each month, between 2.15pm and 3.30pm, in the Louise Hamilton Centre on our hospital site, and they give you the opportunity to speak to, and get information and advice from, our team, as well as talking to others with a similar diagnosis.

You are welcome to come to the meeting or, if you would like more information about this group, or any of our other cancer support groups, you can contact our Cancer Care Navigators by calling 01493 452783 or emailing [email protected]

Our Tia’s Treasures box at our main reception desk has been topped up again with new bracelets, keyrings and other items including some TT Lucky Ducks!
The Tia’s Treasures team have added a little flock of TT Lucky Ducks to the box and, by purchasing one or more of the treasures, you’ll be helping them raise even more money for the James Paget Hospital Charity.
So far they’ve raised more than £7,000 for our charity through the sale of treasures at our main reception, with the aim of reaching £10,000 by Christmas, so if you’ve been wanting to get your hands on a TT Lucky Duck, now is your chance.
Every Lucky Duck that finds a new home and every donation takes them a little step closer.

Our Sandra Chapman Centre, which supports patients with malignant and non-malignant conditions, including blood disorders and cancers, has received a generous donation from the Norfolk Masonic Clay Pigeon Shooting Association following recent fundraising activity.
The Centre is one of several local charities and groups who have benefitted from the generosity of the Association, which raises money through clay pigeon shoots and raffles at the events. The Association – a group of Masons and non Masons that organise Clay shooting events, usually at Mid Norfolk Shooting Ground in Taverham - have also supported local organisations including the Great Yarmouth Go Ahead Club, a charity and social group for adults with learning disabilities, and the Caring Together Charity, that supports carers.
On Wednesday a cheque for £250 was handed over to our hospital charity for the Sandra Chapman Centre by the Secretary of Norfolk Masonic Clay Pigeon Shooting Association. The Association has a lot of Great Yarmouth based members and the Sandra Chapman Centre was one of the organisations that was chosen to receive money from fundraising raffles and donations at the shoots.
We’d like to thank everyone involved in this fundraising, including those who organised the events and took part, and those who donated raffle prizes or made a cash donation. The funds will go towards supporting patients using the Centre.

A Sparkle and Shine Ball is being held at the Hotel Victoria in Lowestoft later this year, with the event raising funds to support survivors of domestic abuse accessing services at the James Paget.
The Sparkle and Shine Ball will be held at the hotel on Saturday 28 November - so this might be perfect for a pre-Christmas party night with friends, colleagues or family.
The evening will start at 7pm, with guests asked to arrive from 6.30pm, and tickets, priced £50, will include a three-course meal and entertainment, plus a donation to support domestic abuse survivors who come into our hospital.

We’re looking for volunteers to join our breastfeeding peer supporters, who work with new mums to provide advice and support with breastfeeding.
The volunteer role may suit someone who is retired or semi-retired or someone who wants to support other mums. You would need to be able to provide at least two hours a week and will work on our maternity wards and at community hubs.

Our Colorectal Nurse Led Support Group will meet in the Louise Hamilton Centre, on our hospital site, between 2pm and 3pm on Thursday afternoon, 27 August.
The group is for anyone who has had a colorectal cancer diagnosis and offers an opportunity for you to talk to our specialist nurses, to meet others facing similar challenges, and to get information and advice.
It doesn’t matter whether you have recently been diagnosed or if you have been living with this type of cancer for some time and have decided you might like to get some support, you are welcome to come along for a chat.
Our Macmillan Cancer Care Navigators will also be on hand to signpost to some of the emotional and financial support that may be available for you, and free refreshments are served.

Our Arts & Craft Pop Up event continues in the main foyer of the James Paget tomorrow, Tuesday 25 August, and you’re invited to pop in to browse and buy.
There will be a variety of arts and crafts on display in the main reception area tomorrow and on Wednesday and Thursday, 26 and 27 August, between 10am and 4pm, with local artists exhibiting their work for sale.

A corner of a ward at the James Paget has been transformed into a tuck shop to help patients stay both mentally and physically active.
Staff on Ward 12, which provides cares for older patients, came up with the idea of turning part of the ward into a mock-up of a store offering sweet treats such as fruit drinks, custard pots and snacks.
The shop is designed to help patients with cognitive impairments receive some mental stimulus – as well as encourage them to stay active by taking a stroll across the ward, accompanied by staff.
Once at the shop, patients can select their goods and place them in a basket or bag – but, unlike at a real store, all the items are free.
The creation of the store has been a collaborative effort, with the structure purchased by Morgan Sindall Construction / Sothams Engineering Services Ltd – and the shelves stocked with goodies, thanks to the hospital’s catering team and fund-raising events held by staff on the ward.
It was formally opened earlier this week, with patient Malcolm ‘Eddie’ Edmonds cutting the ribbon in front of a gathering of staff, including representatives from our Estates and Catering teams.

Patients who use our Renal Unit gathered at our Louise Hamilton Centre on Sunday, 16 August, for a summer social event where they enjoyed food and activities.
The event, which was organised by members of the Renal Unit team past and present, including Carly Falgate, Sandra Shields, Kerry Womack and Cherie Ballard, in conjunction with Louise Hamilton Centre manager Sue Francis, saw more than 70 people attend.
Patients who receive dialysis in the Unit, accompanied by family members and friends, took part in a quiz, balloon modelling and face painting and enjoyed music from Dave Salt.
Dialysis is a type of treatment that helps your body remove extra fluid and waste products from your blood when the kidneys are not able to. Dialysis was first used successfully in the 1940s and became a standard treatment for kidney failure starting in the 1970s. Patients dialyse three times per week for up to four hours at a time and, as they are at the unit frequently, close bonds are often forged between patients and staff. The event – one of several held each year - gives an opportunity to meet and socialise away from this clinical environment.
