Covering a stretch of the Norfolk coast, Great Yarmouth & Gorleston RNLI Lifeboats consists of an all weather, Trent class lifeboat 'Samarbeta' and an Inshore, Atlantic 85 ‘John Rowntree’

The station is run and funded by the Royal National Lifeboat Institute and relies solely on charitable donations.

Last Friday evening, the volunteer crew from our station were invited to Ecclestone Close Community Centre.

The community centre had recently held a fundraising day for the RNLI and managed to raise over £1,000!

The crew and our shop volunteers were treated to a huge buffet and live music before Coxswain, Andy Mason, was presented with the cheque by centre manager, Julie.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Julie and her helpers and all who contributed on the fundraising day and presentation night.

Your fundraising efforts help us to continue saving lives at sea.

🏅🛟 Achievement award! 🛟🏅

At a recent Lifeboat Guild meeting, long serving volunteer, Jan Gent, was awarded an incredible 30 years’ service award!

Jan was presented with her award by the Chair of the Guild, Rev. Albert Cadmore.

Jan was thanked for her continued support, her dedication, committment and service to the Guild and the RNLI.

Our volunteers launched on service to a vessel adrift on the River Bure.

Humber Coastguard requested the launch of our inshore lifeboat (ILB) ‘John Rowntree’ to assist if needed.

The small yacht was located drifting in the river close to the Caister Road pitch and putt course.

The crew made contact with the vessel, placed a crew member onboard and it was found to be unoccupied and a hazard to other river users so it was decided the safest course of action was to take the yacht under tow to a safe berth.

The vessel was made up beside the ILB for an alongside tow and taken to Great Yarmouth Yacht Station where a Coastguard Rescue Team was waiting to assist mooring.

The lifeboat was then stood down with thanks and returned to station for wash down and refuel.

🏅Long Service Awards!🏅

At the end of July, two of our shop volunteers received medals for completing 10 years voluntary service with the RNLI.

Our hardworking shop manager, Jane Webster, and her right hand woman, Molly Smith, celebrated this fantastic achievement at this years’ cliff top gala.

Congratulations from all the crew and keep up the hard work, every penny you raise helps us to continue saving lives at sea.

Our volunteers were requested to launch the charity’s inshore lifeboat (ILB), ‘John Rowntree’, to assist a yacht in difficulty.

The lifeboat crew were tasked to assist a 38 foot yacht, ‘Lucy J’, that had issues with her propeller and was unable to make way under sail due to lack of wind.

The casualty vessel was quickly located 1/2 mile off Gorleston pier heads.

Once on scene the situation was assessed and due to the yacht’s location in a busy shipping lane it was deemed the safest course of action was to tow her to the nearest safe and suitable port.

A crew member was placed onboard the casualty vessel to rig a towing bridle and assist the skipper with steering.

The lifeboat then towed the yacht to Lowestoft and once off Ness Point, the tow was converted to an alongside tow to enter the harbour.

Lowestoft Coastguard Rescue Team assisted the lifeboat crew with mooring lines at a safe berth in the harbour and then the lifeboat was stood down with thanks, returned to station and was ready for service at 00:10 the next day.

HM Coastguard requested our inshore lifeboat (ILB), ‘John Rowntree’, to assist a vessel aground.

The volunteer crew made best speed to the casualty which was located just upriver from Goodchild Marine on the River Waveney.

Once on scene, a welfare check confirmed both persons onboard were fit and well.

The strong wind at the time had caught the cruiser and had blown it aground and with a fast ebbing tide it had become impossible to move.

The two people were taken onboard the lifeboat and transferred to the care of Gorleston Coastguard Rescue Team at the Fisherman’s Inn, Burgh Castle.

The lifeboat was stood down with thanks and returned to station.

#45 & #46 14-Jul-26 19:24:49 - GORLESTON & Gt Yarmouth - Launch Both Boats.

Both of our charity’s lifeboats were paged at 19:24 last night to assist a crew transfer vessel, ‘FARRA SISKIN’ located in the River Yare, that was taking on water after a mechanical failure at sea.

Our colleagues at Lowestoft RNLI had met with the vessel 25 miles out after a Mayday call was received and had escorted the stricken vessel into Great Yarmouth.

Our lifeboats arrived on scene and 2 ILB crew were put onto the casualty vessel, along with 2 salvage pumps (from ILB and ALB).

Once the water was at a suitable level the crew of the casualty vessel managed to temporarily patch the leak.

The ILB salvage pump was left on board to manage any further water ingress and the vessel was later lifted out of the river at Alicat’s boatyard.

Also in attendance was a Coastguard Rescue Team assisting on the quayside.
Both boats were stood down with thanks and returned to station.

#44 12-Jul-26 20:01:03 - GORLESTON & Gt Yarmouth - Launch ALB.

In her first shout since going on service at Great Yarmouth and Gorleston, Legacy Lifeboat 13-44, ‘George and Frances Phelon’ was tasked to assist in a search.

The Shannon class lifeboat made best speed to the commence search position given by HM Coastguard and began a parallel track search for a missing person.

Also involved in the search were Caister’s ILB, ALB and Coastguard helicopter 163.

After more than 5 hours searching, the lifeboat headed in for a crew change before continuing the search until 3am.

At this time the search was called off by the Coastguard and the volunteers were stood down with nothing found.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing person.
