STATEMENT ON YESTERDAY'S PROTESTS
Yesterday saw a large and, for the most part, peaceful gathering of local people in Gosport, reflecting genuine concerns about small boat crossings and what they mean for our community.
Gosport Liberal Democrats fully respect the right of residents to protest and to express those concerns peacefully. However, we are disappointed that a small number of incidents resulted in six arrests.
We would like to thank Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, HM Coastguard, the RNLI, Border Force and all the emergency services involved for their work in what were difficult circumstances.
There is a responsibility on all of us to avoid inflaming tensions. Calls to hinder rescue operations are deeply concerning, while unverified claims and inflammatory material circulating online can create unnecessary fear and tension. Those with large online followings, including elected representatives, have a particular responsibility to check the facts before sharing or repeating claims.
What Gosport needs now is calm and sensible discussion. Residents have legitimate questions and concerns, and those deserve to be heard through proper democratic debate.
We are particularly disappointed that yesterday’s council meeting had to be postponed. We hope it can be rearranged promptly so councillors and residents can discuss these issues openly and constructively.
The postponement also meant that important local issues, including tougher enforcement against fly-tipping and council support for terminally ill residents in our town, were unable to be heard. These matters affect people across Gosport and should not be lost amid the events of yesterday.
