Cliff rescue team members being brought back to the top of the cliff after a technical rescue today

21/03/2022

Yesterday afternoon we were tasked to a report of 2 persons being swept out to sea at Rhossili. The best vantage point for this type of incident is outside the station on top of the 200 foot cliffs looking down. We soon spotted the casualties, we kept them under observation until the first rescue asset arrived on scene. Burryport lifeboat and Coastguard rescue helicopter both arrived and it was decided to recover the casualties by the lifeboat. Both were brought ashore cold and shocked. Both casualties along with the paramedic from the helicopter were taken in the Coastguard vehicle back to our station to be checked over, given blankets and warmed up.Our thanks also to the off duty Doctor who assisted in their care. Thankfully both did not need further treatment and were released from our care. Soon after another person was reported in difficulty in the same area, this time the casualty made shore unaided. At the time of these incidents there was a very strong off shore wind and an ebbing tide our advice is to know your capabilities in the prevailing conditions, and if in any doubt wait for better weather on another day and enjoy your day safely. Mumbles and Tenby lifeboats were also tasked but stood down enroute.

At 6.30 last night, Rhossili and Mumbles coastguards teams got tasked to a dog over the cliff at Rhossili. On arrival we meet up with the owner of the dog. She said her dog (a Doberman pup) had chased a sheep, and both the sheep and dog had gone over the cliff and were in the sea. The dog had managed to scramble onto a ledge and we could hear the dog barking.
Her partner had made his way down the cliff to try and rescue the dog. This was extremely dangerous and could have been a different rescue.
Please stay safe and call 999. Do not try and attempt a rescue yourself.
Fortunately, this person made his way back up to the top of the cliff once he saw us. Providing us with useful information for the rescue.
Burry port and Tenby lifeboat were also tasked. Burry port lifeboat tried to rescue the dog, but it was deemed too dangerous.
Tenby lifeboat stayed on scene providing light and safety as we set up a cliff rescue system. Thank you this was really helpful and appreciated.
Mumbles team arrived and assisted in the recovery.
One of our team was lowered to the base of the cliff where the dog was safe and well but petrified in a small cave just above the waterline
The dog was retrieved safely and passed over to the grateful owners.

If you can't control your dogs please please put the dog on a lead.

And please please do not try and rescue animals please call 999 and ask for the Coastguards. We are happy to help.and we are trained for it.

The farmer was informed about the sheep that did not survive.

 Great teamwork by all teams.

We got tasked last night to a guy that was calling for help, stuck on the cliffs at culver hole by Porteynon. Rhossili, oxwich and mumbles coastguards got tasked along with rescue 187, Horton and Porteynon lifeboat, the fire brigade and the police.
Once we found the casualty on a narrow ledge high up the cliff face, the teams started transporting all Technical cliff rescue equipment from the campsite in Porteynon to the clifftop. Thankfully rescued 187 managed to pluck the casualty off the cliff face and lowered him to safety. A very Tecnical recovery great skills
Thank you to all the teams that responded setting up a primary recovery along with a backup recovery system

Rhossili Coastguards got tasked to Burry Holmes this evening to reports of a vessel that had sunk, but was on the beach close to blue pool.

When we arrived, Burry port lifeboat was already on scene and had made sure everything was safe.
The fishing boat had taken a wave and filled with water, but the crew had managed to make it to shore.
We all managed to empty the fishing boat of water, and it was ok to refloat.
The lifeboat towed the fishing boat and transported the crew of the fishing boat back to Burry Port

Excellent teamwork, and thanks to Burry port lifeboat,
