Everyone is welcome at Grantham House and this week, that has extended to a very special family… of rescued hedgehogs!
A mother and her four small babies were discovered in a dangerous place on a building site back in May and the kind builders from Willow Homes Lincolnshire Ltd. immediately called the British Hedgehog Preservation Society for advice. They were directed to the nearby Prickleback Urchin Hedgehog Rescue, based in Rutland, who took the family in after a short stay at Grantham’s Avenue Vets.
Rachel and Jason, the husband-and-wife team who run the rescue, looked after the family until they were ready to be returned to the wild, keeping them in a special maternity enclosure, monitoring their progress closely and ensuring they had everything they needed to thrive and grow.
When the little hoglets were big and strong enough to be safely released, along with mum, Rachel sought a safe place for them to live. Being close to their original location while offering the peaceful natural habitat they required, complete with mature gardens and ample hiding spots, Grantham House was chosen as the ideal spot for them to thrive!
We were delighted to welcome our new residents this Tuesday and look forward to catching glimpses of them as they grow up together in their beautiful new home.
The successful rescue and release of the hedgehog family highlights the importance of vigilance from anyone undertaking building or gardening work and the dedication of wildlife rescue teams. The collaboration between the builders, the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, Avenue Vets, Prickleback Urchin Hedgehog Rescue and the National Trust exemplifies how different groups can come together to protect and preserve our vulnerable hedgehogs!
